If you could go back in time and speak to your younger self, what would you say?

In 1994 little Tez was just 4 years old with a love for colour and great fashion sense (thanks to my mum). I would never leave the house without my hands full. My tiny arms stretched out holding more possessions than they could carry and no self-doubt whatsoever. Always crafting, creating and curious. I was happiest drawing or doing pottery. I didn’t like subjects like Maths, English & Science so looking back now I would say I was always meant to be a creative.

So if could go back to 1994 and speak to little Tez I’d say “Never let go of your likes and interests to follow the crowds. You don’t need to like the same things as your friends (Age 11 Tez wants to be a vet because her best friend did). Creating isn’t just a hobby and if you always have a burning desire to create then follow that.
Creativity is in you and it always will be. It’s who you are. You’re a creator”.

Why is creativity important for Children?

When I asked myself this question and started to research I didn’t I think for one minute I would find the validation I had clearly been seeking. Here’s me thinking creativity is something that should be a hobby when in fact “Being creative is beneficial for our sense of well-being and mental health”. Which makes total sense because I feel fulfilled when I am being creative. Colours make me feel happy and funky patterns light me up. So I found this particular article really interesting and reassuring.

I’ve spent my whole adult life so far in boring jobs just to pay the bills and not once did I look for anything creative. Why not?

It may have taken until I was 30 years old and a global pandemic for me to really think about what I want to do with my life but when I finally had the head space to create in 2020 I came up with this…

My own unique brand The Tur-Shirt Company.

Tur-Shirts can only be read when children who are wearing them, look at themselves in the mirror. Encouraging positive self-talk.

I want my creations to make a positive impact on young people’s wellbeing and champion their own uniqueness through my unique concept.

The message behind the backwards affirmations printed on T-Shirts is - it doesn’t matter what you look like to others, it’s what you see when you look in the mirror that counts.

The way we speak to ourselves matters. We will never speak to another person on this planet as much as we will speak to ourselves. That inner dialogue contributes to our choices, our emotions and our well being.

I personally wasn’t very kind to myself growing up and knowing first hand how that felt, I’ve decided to create a tool that encourages positive self-talk whilst feeding my creative spark.

Positive self-talk works the same as negative self-talk. If you practice it enough, you will start to believe it!
