In the ordinary world of Inside Out, a panel of emotions live inside a girl's head. Joy is the main character and is essentially in charge of all of the other emotions and making sure Riley (the girl) is happy. Joy along with 4 other emotions; Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust all work together to make sure each core memory is held up by happiness and that each memory is saved. Along with Headquarters, there are multiple personality islands that make up little parts of Riley's personality. Together, each emotion plays a key role in Riley's success and happiness.

A Call to Adventure

If an emotion touches an orb that is not theirs it changes the emotion to that memory as a whole, so everyone has to make sure they don't touch the orbs. Well, one day Sadness decides to touch the memory orb that was happy. This turned a happy core memory into a sad one. With this turn of events, Joy tries everything in her power to stop the orb from getting in the core memory holder and ends up dropping all the core memories. After, Sadness tries to help pick them up and almost turns other core memories sad.

Refusal of the Call

As Joy gets more irritated, she decides to draw a circle in headquarters away from all the memory orbs to keep Sadness in. Once she draws this circle, Sadness keeps leaving it and touching more memories. When Joy realizes, she gets all of the core memories and accidentally drops one which then gets sucked up the memory tube. As Joy is trying to get the orb out of the tube, she gets sucked up too and Sadness follows behind her, getting sucked up as well.

Meeting the Mentor

Joy and Sadness get sucked up through the memory tube and get sent to Long Term Island. Here, they meet Bing Bong who came from Riley's childhood imagination. While Joy and Sadness are looking for Rileys memories they run into Bing Bong and he suggests a dangerous short cut called Abstract Thought. This leads them to Imagination Land.

Crossing the Threshold

On the route that Bing Bong gives them, they find Imagination Land. This is where all of Riley's imagination comes from. Imagination Land is going to be a major focal point in Joy and Sadness' journey. Here is where they find the Dream Boyfriend Generator which will help Joy towards the end. Imagination Land is supposed to lead them to the train station back to headquarters.

Allies, Trials, Enemies

Joy and Sadness try and scare Riley out of her dreams because the Train of Thought only runs when Riley's awake and that's their transportation to find Riley's memories. While they are trying to do that they are thrown in a jail with a clown and need to escape. Joy frees him without waking the fear up, however they realize that Jangles is the only way to get Riley awake. The group reluctantly wake up Jangles and run quickly with the mad clown in hot pursuit, leading him back to Dream Productions which causes Riley to wake up in shock.

Approach to the Inmost Cave

After escaping from Jangles the Clown and missing the train, Joy and Bing Bong fall into the forgotten memories when they are trying to retrieve the core memories and they cannot get out. Forgotten memories is where faded memories are thrown into a pile and eventually they disappear and are forgotten about. This is when Joy realizes the importance of Sadness in Riley's life.

Ordeal

Joy and Bing Bong attempt to use the magic wagon to get out of forgotten memories, and at the last moment Bing Bong jumps off so that Joy can succeed. This is the turning point for both of the characters because it shows the bravery Bing Bong has to be forgotten by Riley to have Joy succeed her mission. When Joy merely reaches the top of Long Term, she realizes Bing Bong jumped off and sadly watches him fade away into the forgotten memories. After this, She tries to find Sadness to get back to Headquarters

The Road Back

Joy reunites with Sadness after she uses the magic wagon to get out of Forgotten Memories and ends up having to pull sadness all the way through Long term. Once they reach Imagination Land, Sadness gets on a cloud and starts floating away. Joy gets a great idea to take a balloon and blow Sadness all the back to headquarters using the air from the balloon. Joy then uses the Imaginary Boyfriend Generator to make many boyfriends. She places them all in her bag then makes her way to the edge of Long Term Island. She wants to reach the trampoline on Family Island and uses a long string of boyfriends to launch her to the trampoline.

Return With Prize

After being launched on the trampoline, Joy and Sadness meet up in the sky to then crash into headquarters. Disgust uses Anger's head to create a hole in the gals so that Joy and Sadness get in. After this, the emotions all work together and Joy uses Sadness to get Riley back home and with her family. The emotions get a new console and start working together more harmoniously. At the end, the core memories are now made from not only joy, but mixed with other emotions as well.
