         <description><![CDATA[<div>Florence became wealthy from their cloth making and banking. They raised sheep in the Arno Hills. Allowing for the processing of wool. Bankers in Florence developed a book keeping system which is still used today. People came from other parts of Italy and from the rest of Europe to invest in the wool industry. Also, people were able to borrow money, with a fee of interest which encouragied their own success. It helped the economy throughout the Italian city-states. The Medici family established branches of their bank all over Italy and other parts of Europe. Their wealth allowed them to dominate the textiles industry, spices and the international financial scene. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>   Florence became the center of Italian art, liter- ature and culture. The Medici family became patrons to many famous artists like Donatello, Leonardo da Vinci, Brunelleschi, Michelangelo and Botticelli who helped spread ideas of Renaissance.     Leonardo da Vinci was also a scientist and an inventor. He invented wings hoping people could fly like a bird. Also, Michelangelo with his great architectural achieve- ments of the massive domes of the Florence Cathedral. This spread to the other city-states and the rest of Europe to pay for statues, paintings and beautiful buildings. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Venice was the most  prosporous and the most powerful city-state. Venice grew rich from its sea trade. With their hundreds of ships they dominated the Mediterranean commerce and controlled the seas around the east coast of Italy. Taxes were collected on all merchandise coming into its harbor.  Warships were built to protect valuables on its merchant ships from any pirate raids. Venice´s primary industry was ship building and became famous for its artistic glass. Silk, spices and perfume flowed into Venice from Asia.</div>]]></description>
