La danse debout et la danse au sol.
Concernant la danse au sol, on parlera de break et de différents mouvements techniques (Uprock, pass-pass, les phases).
Concernant la danse debout, on parle de styles car ils sont référés à des univers vestimentaires, musicales et gestuelles.
On parle de danse Oldschool (style) et de Newschool. Les danses new school sont associés aux musiques électroniques.

La danse debout naît dans les années 1970 tant dans la rue que dans les discothèques de Los Angeles.

Il est l'emblème de la danse Hip-Hop. Il est dansé traditionnellement dans un cercle.
Le Breakdance comprend des pas de préparation debout ainsi que des figures au sol.
Les figures debout du break sont les pas de préparation TOPROCKS.
Les TOPROCKS sont des pas de base qui laisse de la liberté à l'imagination et au style personnel du danseur.
Les figures au sol du break sont les passe-passes et les phases.
Les passes-passes sont des rotations à partir d'une position basse du corps. on danse autour de deux ou 3 appuis. On les appelles rocksteady footwook ou jeu de jambe. 
Les phases sont des figures beaucoup plus acrobatiques, on peut les appeler power moves si ce sont des grandes phases ou des tracks pour les plus petites phases.

Style locking
Ce style est régi par un principe de décomposition des mouvements et d'"arrêt sur image"

On dit que Don Campbell, aurait inventé le style locking en dansant de manière maladroite en boites de nuits. Les mouvements de pointing serait inspirés des affiches de propagandes américaine de recrutement.
