Advection fog is formed by the slow passage of relatively warm, moist, stable air over a colder wet surface. It is common at sea whenever cold and warm ocean currents are in close proximity and may affect adjacent coasts. A good example is provided by the frequent dense fogs formed off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland in summer, when winds from the warm Gulf Stream blow over the cold Labrador Current. It also may occur over land, especially in winter when warm air blows over frozen or snow-covered ground. Advection fogs occur most readily with winds of about 5 metres per second (10 miles per hour), sufficiently light to maintain a temperature contrast between air and surface and not strong enough to produce turbulent mixing through a considerable depth of the atmosphere. Typical advection fogs extend up to heights of a few hundred metres and sometimes also occur together with radiation fogs

As droplets form during the radiative cooling process the radiation emitted by this shallow layer of air increases and more heat is lost, causing fog. Advection fog can also cause condensation when an air mass moves horizontally over the ground towards a colder region and the air mass itself is cooled by turbulent heat conduction to the ground. The Emirates are interesting in their topological aspect for the favourable formation of fog, and both radiative and advective forms are quite common. Basically, the country can be considered a large triangle mostly covered with sand, surrounded on two sides with water. On the one hand the water is relatively warm in summer compared to the land, and on the other it is relatively cool in winter. It is well known that arid deserts are hot by day and cool at night. The radiative cooling effect in the area south of Abu Dhabi known as Ad-Dhafrah causes moist air in that region brought in by the afternoon sea breeze to condense and form fog; indeed, in areas where there are many small undulating hills (dunes) and valleys, fog formation tends to be higher, the valleys acting as cold air traps enhancing the surface condensation effect. In Abu Dhabi advection fog off the sea can be caused by local differences in sea temperatures in the Arabian Gulf. Fog forms over the sea due to these differences and drifting coastwards can at times be a major influence on traffic. later, as the land/sea temperature contrast increases, the fog may drift back out to sea and wait there until later in the evening when it can drift back onshore.Airports are greatly influenced by fog formation in the Gulf, and every Gulf airport experiences closure at some time or another due to low visibility; however, because fog is localised, it is highly unlikely that all airports would be affected at the same time. Fog clearance systems are available, with huge heaters attached to fans, but none of the Gulf airports are thus equipped.

Coastal fog is usually a result of advection fog which forms when relatively warm, moist air passes over a cool surface. In the UK, the most common occurrence of coastal fog is when warm air moves over the cool surface of the North Sea towards the east coast of the UK.

When this happens, the cold air just above the sea's surface cools the warm air above it until it can no longer hold its moisture and so forces it to condense forming tiny particles of water which forms the fog that we see.

Coastal fog usually occurs in the spring and summer months when conditions begin to warm up but the sea (which warms more slowly) stays relatively cold.

The impact, location and movement of coastal fog depends upon a number of conditions, including wind strength, wind direction and land temperature. If, as is common along the UK's east coast, the winds blow in from the east, the fog will often rapidly cover the coast in a blanket of fog. If the land temperature is warm the fog can quickly dissipate as the parcel of air warms, however if the land temperature is cooler, the fog can linger for a longer time.

Coastal fog might also refer to pre-existing fog which is transferred from a distant source and is simply moved to the coast by prevailing weather patterns.

-anhui, china
A sea of clouds forms generally in valleys or over seas in very stable air mass conditions such as in a temperature inversion.Humidity can then reach saturation and condensation leads to a very uniform stratocumulus cloud.Above this layer, the air must be dry. This is a common situation in a high pressure area with cooling at the surface by radiative cooling at night in a summer or advection of cold air in winter or in a marine layer
