True to its etymology ("liminal" being derived from the Latin word limen, meaning "threshold"), the concept of a liminal space encompasses physical spaces that, due to their function, are transitional in nature - hallways, waiting rooms, parking lots and rest stops are the archetypical examples of such places. Liminal space aesthetics relate to the unique feelings of eeriness, nostalgia, and apprehension people report when presented with such places outside of their designed context; most notably, their function as intermediary points between origin and destination.

The Scottish-American anthropologist Victor Turner was key in the conceptual elaboration of the connection between communitas and crisis. Communitas as an open, egalitarian and solidary community seeks to overcome ethnic, national and social hierarchical boundaries such as gender or class and to form a counterweight to the "cold", normative structure of society.

According to Turner, communitas is not based on fixed social structures, but emerges in liminality - for Turner, the liminal phase of ritual - and is accompanied by an associated leveling of (social) differences. As a collective threshold state, liminality is characterized by a high degree of performativity of symbolic actions as well as their transformative power and thus, according to Erika Fischer-Lichte, opens up "cultural scope for experimentation and innovation".

One concept that has gained much attention due to its ability to capture both the essence and emergence of such interregnum, or in-between states and the problems and tensions inherent in transitioning from one state to another, is that of ‘liminality.’ For Thomassen (2016), liminality refers to:...momentsor periods of transition during which the normal limits to thought, self-understanding and behaviour are relaxed, opening the way to novelty and imagination, construction and destruction. For these reasons, the concept of liminality has the potential to push social and political theory in new directions. (p. 1)As a concept, liminality was first described by anthropologist Arnold van Gennep in his 1909 publication Les Rites de Passage(van Gennep 1909/2013), in which he studied the importance of transitions for any society. In his culture-transcending empirical work, van Gennep saw that rites of passage appeared to follow a generic pattern. The sequence he identified begins with a phase of separation, characterized by disjointing anddetachment from the given order of things, and moves to a phase of incorporation and integration. The middle phase he coined as the ‘liminal phase,’with the feeling of liminality leading to feelings of ambiguity and unsettling uncertainty for the liminalsubject(s), which include individuals and collectives alike.
