Communitas as an open, egalitarian and solidary community seeks to overcome ethnic, national and social hierarchical boundaries such as gender or class and to form a counterweight to the "cold", normative structure of society.

According to Turner, communitas is not based on fixed social structures, but emerges in liminality - for Turner, the liminal phase of ritual - and is accompanied by an associated leveling of (social) differences. As a collective threshold state, liminality is characterized by a high degree of performativity of symbolic actions as well as their transformative power and thus, according to Erika Fischer-Lichte, opens up "cultural scope for experimentation and innovation".
