Hello, my name is Gabrielle Semino. I am a full time student at Miami Dade West Campus and I am currently working at a sushi restaurant. Life to me is all about building connections and relationships. Since I was in highschool I was always interested in Public Relations. Having a job in the field would be a dream of mine. I could talk to the walls and some would say I am very convincing. Something that means the most to me in this world are friends and family who you can love and trust. My circle is what keeps me strong and motivated to try new things whether it be with school, work, healthy routines, and hobbies. I usually spend my free time walking my golden doodle, working out, and spending time with friends/family. I definitely want to start incorporating some reading and new things to my hobby list!

The topic I chose for today's assignment is Health and Population. I chose this topic because I want everyone in this live to live long and be healthy. The goal here is to try to "ensure healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages”. Everyday people die of natural causes, viruses that are being thrown at us, accidents, and bad habits. We need to try and do what we got to do to help eachother. Get more educated, change our routines, and do more.

“Health and Population | Department of Economic and Social Affairs.” United Nations, United Nations, https://sdgs.un.org/topics/health-and-population.

I chose the story of cosmetics. I chose this story because I live everyday using many products. I put on a full face of makeup everyday, I wash my hair often, and use a bunch of skin care. We are trashing not only the planet but our bodies! This video brings up how less than 20% of the products we use daily are safe. I have about 100 products in my bathroom. Scary! For example Pantene a very popular shampoo brand has chemicals that lead to cancer. Can you imagine a product that you need can lead to sickness! Also my shampoo, makeup, and sunblock. Carcinogens and neurotoxins are what is being found in our products daily. Babies are even being born pre polluted. Also it has been brought to my attention that these products have no true legal definition. Companies allow these products to say urban, organic, and natural when it is not true. The industry can do things like this because they have no laws for change. The FDA does not even access the safety of products. They have banned only 8 of the 2,000 products that are killing us. They do not even require all ingredients to be put on the label! It is a broken system. We need to blame the FDA and not the companies producing these hazardous chemicals. Chemicals need to get out of our products! They are not just gonna leave we have to do something about it. On our own we can google safer products…but we need a bigger change.

https://www.storyofstuff.org/movies/story-of-cosmetics/

Climate Gentrification

What caught my attention is how climate gentrification is happening in our city. I was not aware and had no idea. Climate gentrification is when people with more money begin to move in somewhere and people who lived in an area before are being priced out to live somewhere else. They can no longer afford where they once lived so they simply have to move. Miami is growing but we have to stand for the people who were living their first. Miami is the third fastest growing city. This problem is only becoming worse. People mentioned in the video how we cannot take so long to look into things. As of recently Little Haiti and Liberty City got offered to move out. Where they are being offered to move to places that are more susceptible to sea level rise and wildfires. For example Homestead. Miami’s growth is affecting their gain. Little Haiti, Little Havana, and Overtown are areas that make our city. What spoke out to me is the fact that these areas are historically known for people brown/black. What makes a place is the people in it but climate gentrification is ruining that. Lastly in the video they mention what needs to be changed in order to resolve this. We have to start protecting people’s issues. It is our job to keep our city bright and vibrant by keeping the diversity there. More investments and more understanding need to be made from the government.

My response will be based off the video Why the US isn't ready for clean energy. The whole point of the video is to show us the Greener the future the more renewable energy plants. I went over a few important things today. For example all electricity surrounding states power plants are mostly nuclear and natural gas. We need to switch from gas to electric cars. What I learned today is that we cannot just build a wind turbine to erase polluting plants. We need high voltage power lines far away from everything. My only concern is that California wild fires start from trees being near the power line. According to this video the plan is to build more high voltage power lines. By 2050 42% will be more renewable energy.

What can we do to live longer? Healthy habits can lengthen your life. A key to start is if you do not already have healthy habits incorporated into your life begin! Going to sleep earlier, eating meals at home, exercising regularly, eat fruits/vegetables, etc. These are key ingredients to living a healthy life. Even the little things like laughing can help us live longer. We also have to remember that balance is key. Too much good is bad! Also just like it is good to incorporate good habits we need to eliminate the bad. Smoking, alcohol, fast foods, stress, etc are bad for our health. Keep that list in mind when you think about wanting to live a long and healthy life. The most important thing to remember is that you can make a difference in your health and well-being. Take charge of your life, and be mindful of small behavior changes that can make your lifestyle a healthier one.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

I chose this topic because it stood out to me the most. Every weekend I spend time on sea and what would it be without its beautiful sea life.

How does climate change affect oceans and marine life?
The ocean plays a major role in climate dynamics: 83% of the global carbon cycle is circulated through the ocean. It has absorbed 93% of the excess heat from greenhouse gas emissions since the 1970s.

The ocean is home to between 500,000 and 10 million marine species, contributing enormously to the biodiversity of our planet.

Given its importance to the planet, it is vital we manage the ocean in a sustainable way. Changes to the ocean mean changes to fish stocks. To manage fishing sustainably requires adapting to whatever issues climate change brings.

In the past 30 years, marine heatwaves are estimated to have increased by more than 50%. Globally, ocean temperatures are predicted to increase by 1-4°C by 2100.

These changes are impacting marine life. Sudden rises in temperature and acidification can lead to the loss of marine habitats and species. Shifting ocean currents and warming waters are changing the distribution of fish stocks and altering the structure of ecosystems.

Desalination water

Desalination is the process of getting salt out of saltwater so that it's drinkable and usable on land. There are two main techniques: You can boil the water, then catch the steam, leaving behind the salt. Or you can blast the water through filters that catch the salt but let the liquid through.

Thermal distillation involves boiling seawater, which produces steam that leaves the salt and minerals behind. The steam is then collected and condensed through cooling to produce pure water.

Hemp

Hemp is an amazing product according to this video. I chose this video because marijuana/weed/ganja for the most part has a bad look. Now as the years pass by people want to make it legal everywhere. This video shared how hemp was an ingredient in foods back in the day. How it was a resource for great things. Medicine and energy all came with hemp. It was great until we started demonizing and criminalizing it. Cannabis is making a come back because it helps climate change and pollution. Hemp cultivation started in China and after spread out everywhere. Hemp fiber is better for the environment It makes long lasting textiles. 2018 industrial plantations became legal. Hemp’s second problem is peoples strict regulations. Little by little countries are trying to legalize. All in all I picked this video cause I found it interesting. I learned how it can help the environment. I personally do not smoke weed or like it but this video definitely made me have a different outlook on it.
