Mental health can influence how we feel, think, act, and relate to others. A healthy mental state is not just a lack of mental illness, it also plays an essential part in a person’s quality of life. Essentially, self-care is a conscious act needed to promote one's own physical, mental, and emotional health. Self-care is vital for building resilience toward the stress in life that you can't eliminate. Selfcare can help to manage this stress, lower risk of illness and increase energy and productivity.

Phone screens produce blue light, which trick your brain into thinking it is daylight, and this means that the brain does not produce the same amount of melatonin, which is a hormone that makes us feel sleepy. This means that using your phone before bed can disrupt sleep quality. Therefore, a helpful coping strategy in relation to social media may be switching off your electronic devices before bedtime as it may result in better sleep quality. Reducing exposure to blue light from devices and screens before bed can help you to fall asleep more quickly which promotes a healthy circadian rhythm.

NEGATIVE IMPACTS ⛈

Despite the positive impacts of social media. It cannot be denied that there are negative aspects. Social media can increase levels of feelings of isolation because many people use it to avoid social situations. For many people during lockdown, face-to-face interaction was just not possible, which led to significant increases in feelings of loneliness.

In addition to this, social media usage can lead to feelings of jealousy because it is often used by people to make their life look better than it actually is. Others will then view this content and feel jealous and angry because they wish that their life met these unrealistic standards. Many studies have highlighted that jealousy due to use of social media such as Facebook plays a role in the depression-Facebook link.

Social media usage is heavily linked to FOMO (fear of missing out). If an individual is constantly being made aware of their family and friends’ activities through social media, they may begin to fear that they are missing out which can create feelings of distress. FOMO is linked to lower mood and lower general life satisfaction.

Cyber-bullying can arise on social media, which can negatively impact mental wellbeing, and create feelings of stress and anxiety and can lower self-esteem. Cyber-bullying can seriously impact a person’s mental health because victims of bullying are more likely to experience mental health issues such as depression and anxiety and changes in eating/sleeping patterns.

Social media can also create insecurity about body image. This could be because social media displays many images, including celebrities and models which can display beauty ideals that are impossible to achieve for most people. This often leads people to feel insecure and dissatisfied with their body. Often, issues with body image can lead to serious disorders such as eating disorders and depression.
