Marcus is in your class because of your school district's policy to voluntarily bus African American Students from across the county line, a rare event these days. He lives with his mother. His older brother never attended this school, and never graduated from high school. Marcus has only a few friends in class, a situation made worse by his bus schedule. Marcus' neighborhood friends don't talk to him about school. They don't like the fact that Marcus chooses to bus to a white community, instead of hanging out with them. Marcus feels like he is growing further and further away from his roots.
Marcus loves reading and writing, but feels like an alien in his new school. Virtually everything he reads in school is about the history, accomplishments, and interests of whites. When his people are discussed, it is not in a positive light. Marcus would like to go to college, but his family's finances are limited. Like several other students in your school, he sometimes interrupts in class, a habit you find annoying. You hope for the best for Marcus, but you are not optimistic.

Our group thinks that either the bus route should change or that the teacher needs to be more optimistic about Marcus. She needs to be more aware of what she says while teaching history.
