Use of Diverse Literacy

Strategy: Integrate multicultural literature into the curriculum to provide students with diverse cultural perspectives through storytelling. This approach helps foster inclusivity and supports a more comprehensive understanding of different worldviews. According to Rosa Nam's 2023 article, "Teacher Use of Diverse Literature in Secondary English Language Arts Classrooms: District Barriers and Resistance Strategies," educators often face district-level challenges and resistance when trying to incorporate diverse literature. However, successful strategies include engaging students with culturally relevant texts that promote empathy, critical thinking, and broader cultural awareness.

For example, in English/Language Arts, introduce The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, which portrays the experiences of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago. This novel allows students to explore themes of identity, culture, and the immigrant experience. It encourages reflection on universal issues such as belonging and self-discovery, while providing a lens through which students can understand the nuances of cultural diversity. Despite potential barriers, such as resistance from some educational districts, integrating such works is an effective way to foster a more inclusive and empathetic classroom environment, as suggested by Nam's study.

Strategy: Encourage group projects where students work together to learn about different cultures and viewpoints.

For example, in Social Studies or History, create a Global History Project. In this project, student groups can research events like the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S., Indian Independence, or the Chinese Cultural Revolution. They can then present how these events impacted their own culture and the world. This project helps students understand how history connects different cultures and shows how people face similar challenges in different ways.
