After a destructive bombing on the village of Guernica, Pablo Picasso created this painting. With an obvious theme of war, the painting covers the horrors that went down in Guernica as well as the suffering of the Spanish people during the World War and Spanish civil war.

In 1937, Picasso expressed his outrage against war with Guernica, his enormous mural-sized painting displayed to a lot of visitors at the Paris World's Fair. it's since become the 20 th century's most powerful indictment against war, a painting that also feels intensely relevant today. Warplanes of the German Condor Legion, commanded by Colonel Wolfram von Richthofen, bombed Guernica for about two hours.

The theme was the spanish civil war

The piece also acts as an anti war statement because, ... The oversized mural is painted in black and grey tones. The symbolism of the painting is complicated, but the key factors that one takes away from this piece are the suffering and human pain. the image doesn't glorify victory or heroism; rather it highlights the impact of war's destructive nature. The usage of black, grey and white symbolises life, in between and death respectively. White is life, black is death, and also the rest, which is that the present, is grey.

Guernica basically shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon many individuals, particularly innocent civilians during the time.

Some history behind Guernica is that it was a town in the province of Biscay in Basque Country. During the Spanish Civil War, it was shown as the northern bastion of the Republican resistance movement and the epicenter of Basque culture.

Picasso painted this painting to show the horrors in an abstract way. After the bombing of Guernica where the Basque Country in Northern Spain was bombed. The painting was then put in an exhibit to raise money for the Spanish War relief funds. The Pablo Picasso's painting is now a sign of anti-war.

Most historians believed that Picasso depicted the bombing conducted by the German air force in Guernica, a Spanish village during the Spanish Civil War. The imaged showed animals and human suffered from this attack. Francisco wanted to terror people did not support him. The German air force used this as an opportunity to practise new a tatic, which targeted civilians instead of armies.
