Through the poem "Mending Walls' the practices and traditions is interpreted by a 'wall' which may be taken figuratively and literally, the title of "mending walls" gives the perception that relationships may have barriers which obstruct discovery. The symbolism of "he is all pine and I am apple orchard" conveys the relationship that one is open to discovery tradtions, as the apple orchard is fruitful and willing spread, where the other lacks the motivation to overcome barries to part take in traditions however share similarities which is that they are both trees, THis barries which is stopping thier connection ....

The obvious reference to tradition of the poem, is the adage of "good friends make good neighbours". This is ironic as the neighbours come together to repair the barrier that keeps them apart. The protagonist then realises "Why do they make good neighbours?" He uses language of uncertainty to challenge the truism, he is confronted by the neighbour on the hill. He then goes against the so called 'tradition' and realises that the wall is the only thing that binds them together

Within the poem, tradition is illustrated, as a barrier, with the "wall" acting as a physical manifestation of "tradition". The wall is being constantly repaired by the neighbour, who never questions the validity of the wall's existence. His only evidence of support for maintaining the wall is the advice given by his father "Good fences, make good neighbours". In this way the poem displays how tradition can be a barrier to discovery, here the neighbour is driven to carry out a monotonous task with the only basis for it being tradition, while his other neighbour, is free to ponder the existence of the wall, and question why they have to always fix the wall. "Why do they make good neighbours? Isn't it where there are cows? But here there are no cows." The other neighbour who is not tied down by the constraints of tradition, naturally discovers more about his world. Compared to the neighbour fixing the wall, who seems to be stuck in the cyclical nature of maintaining the wall, this is illustrated by the repetitive and circular tone of the poem. In this way it can be surmised that tradition can be seen as a barrier to discovery as it ties down people to the past, and makes them focus on it, rather than going beyond what they know to discover new boundaries and possibilities, interestingly this often means or leads to the eventual destruction and/ or change of tradition itself. Does discovery come at the expense of tradition? Does tradition be maintained at the expense of discovery? Can there ever be a balance of both? The poem does not answer this.

Tradition of repeatedly participating in the building of the wall creates a spontaneous barrier to discovery. He discovers there is no use to the creation of the wall and questions traditions but as this occurs, there is a realisation that tradition is the only way their friendship thrives, acting as a barrier to discovery.
