The love that will never fade

This picture is significant because it signifies how a family is supposed to be and how parents should care for their children. Unlike Jeanette's experience while growing up she had to deal with her parents never really providing anything for her or her siblings like shelter, food, warmth and everything else needed for a child's development. Rex also said to Jeanette as quoted in the book "If you don't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim" which shows how her dads logic wasn't like a typical parent. Rex said he wouldn't let her drown, but what parent would put their child in a situation like this. Despite all of this she and her siblings still helped and loved their parents without a doubt even if they weren't the ideal parents they needed when growing up.

Jeanette's lifestyle while growing up

This picture shows how someone can provide for themselves with very little help from another person. This was exactly Jeanette's lifestyle and how she grew up responsible for herself at a very young age with little to no help from her parents. This quote stated by Jeannette, “Lori and I did work out a budget, and we included a generous allowance for Mom to cover luxuries such as extra-large Hershey bars and cut crystal vases. If we kept to our budget, we believed, we could afford new clothes and shoes and coats, and buy a ton of coal at the cheaper off-season price. Eventually, we could install insulation, run a water pipe into the house, and maybe even add a water heater. But Mom never turned the money over to us. So even though she had a steady job, we were living pretty much like we had before.” (pg. 198) helps to shows how her and her sister try to save money to provide for themselves.

The picture represents some resemblance to Jeanette's dad and his drinking problem. Rex promised Jeannette that he would stop drinking for her birthday. In this quote you could see how Jeannette thinks life will be different now that his dad has stopped drinking, “I wonder what life will be like now,” I said to Lori.
“The same,” she said. “He tried stopping before, but it never lasted.”
“This time it will.”
“How do you know?”
“It’s his present to me." Well of course he breaks his promise and only stays sober for a little bit but then continues drinking again. This is a recurring theme throughout the memoir dealing with false hopes, disillusions and most importantly the promises that were never kept.

This quote "I wondered if the fire had been out to get me. I wondered if all fire was related, like dad said all humans were related, if the fire that had burned me that day while I cooked hot dogs was somehow connected to the fire I had flushed down the toilet and the fire burning at the hotel. I didn't have the answers to those questions, but what I did know was that I lived in a world that at any moment could erupt into fire. It was the sort of knowledge that kept you on your toes."(pg.34) describes how Jeannette comes to a realization. It could also could describe how she figures out that everything you do has consequences unlike her parents who have no knowledge of what that is. This ultimately helps her think differently and start a new living style different from her parents.

In this picture you can see something that represents a Glass Castle like something Rex Walls wanted to build which he never ended up doing. The quote "I stared at the plans. “Dad,” I said, “you’ll never build the Glass Castle.”
“Are you saying you don’t have faith in your old man?”
“Even if you do, I’ll be gone…As soon as I finish classes, I’m getting on the next bus out of here. If the buses stop running, I’ll hitchhike. I’ll walk if I have to. Go head and build the Glass Castle, but don’t do it for me.” In this quote you can see Jeanette learns that her dad is living in this fantasy world and she needs to start living in the real world to move on with her life.

No grudge to be held

In this picture it shows Jeanette's family and it can also help to describe how even after everything Jeannette has gone through with her parents she never holds a grudge against them. Her parents put her and her siblings at harms way many times but that doesn't make her hate them but rather appreciate her past more for creating the experience she got. Jeanette quotes her mom saying “Why spend the afternoon making a meal that will be gone in an hour," she'd ask us, "when in the same amount of time, I can do a painting that will last forever?” and it goes to show you how her mother would paint rather than feed them. This would be a perfect example that shows how she doesn't hold a grudge against her mother and forgives her for these kinds of actions.
