The 'Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice' framework is a significant topic within my nursing education. Specifically, competency standard 1.2 from Domain 1 emphasizes the importance of recognizing patients' cultural backgrounds (Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice Framework, 2020). I have begun to assess my interactions with Afghan patients through reflective methods. For instance, I have discovered that some Afghan patients prefer almond oil, known as roghan-e-badam, as a traditional remedy for skin conditions. (Humdard roghan badam oil | 1mg, n.d.). By acknowledging and incorporating these preferences into my care plans, I can build trust and enhance patient adherence to treatment. I am committed to further improving my cultural competence as I continue my studies.

Reference:

Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice Framework.
“Social inclusion and non-discrimination”

According to the World Health Organization [WHO], 2021, social inclusion and a lack of discrimination are significant variables that impact the health of Afghan refugees in Australia. Reducing mental health conditions like sadness and anxiety can be achieved by assisting refugees in accessing healthcare and community services through social inclusion. According to Johnson et al. (2022), for instance, I discovered that social connection-promoting community activities can aid refugees with their PTSD symptoms. On the other side, prejudice can exacerbate medical conditions and hinder the assimilation of refugees into society (Smith, 2023). It is essential to create supportive environments through inclusive policies and community programs to improve health outcomes for Afghan refugees (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2024).

References:

Johnson, R., Lee, A., & Martinez, P.

Afghan food is a vital component of the culture and offers an understanding of health-related customs. Recipes high in protein and carbs, such as Kabuli Pilaf, provide potential health benefits (Ahmed, 2021). As my knowledge of nutrition grows, I see how crucial it is to respect dietary preferences while guiding nutrition. For instance, if I were to advise dietary modifications to a diabetic patient from Afghanistan, I would consider their customs and offer healthier substitutes appropriate for their culture (Brown, 2022). I intend to increase my cultural competency and improve health outcomes in my future nursing profession by learning about Afghan eating customs.

References: -

Ahmed, N.

Afghan culture emphasizes music, which is frequently used in healing rites. Cultural Significance of Music in Afghan Communities, 2023, states that instruments such as the Rubab are essential to community gatherings. I discovered that promoting emotional well-being and a sense of belonging is possible by incorporating Afghan refugees into musical activities. Anxiety and despair among refugees may be successfully reduced by music therapy, according to a study by Youssef et al. (2022). I intend to apply music to my future practice to honor and celebrate cultural history as I finish my studies and realize the possibilities of music in healthcare.

References: -

Cultural significance of music in Afghan communities.

In medicine, efficient communication is crucial, particularly for Afghan patients whose primary languages are Dari and Pashto (Patel, 2022). I am discovering that supplying appropriate resources for a given culture and using interpreters can assist in getting across language hurdles. To guarantee that patients are aware of their medical conditions and available treatments, for example, translating health brochures and employing qualified interpreters during consultations are recommended (Effective Use of Interpreters in Healthcare, 2023). I intend to enhance patient engagement and results in my future nursing career by emphasizing straightforward communication.

References: -

Effective use of interpreters in healthcare.

Mental health issues, especially PTSD and anxiety, are common among Afghan refugees due to their traumatic experiences (Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide, 2020). The guide indicates that culturally tailored cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be effective. Incorporating cultural beliefs, like family involvement in therapy sessions, can help improve symptoms and the quality of life for refugees (Thompson, 2023). As I continue my education, I will become familiar with more and more mental health topics, and I recognize that early intervention and culturally competent care are vital to my future nursing practice.

References:

Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide.

When I reflect on my experience learning about Afghan culture, I can understand how providing treatment sensitive to cultural differences can improve patient outcomes. I aim to enhance my practice by incorporating cultural insights into patient treatment through continuous learning and adaptation. For instance, training on cultural competency has improved my understanding of Afghan customs and will guide my future caregiving strategies. This technique will assist me in creating a more inclusive and productive healthcare environment by incorporating self-reflection and a dedication to learning about diverse cultural viewpoints. I am just waiting to continue learning more about the cultural aspects of healthcare.

The diverse ethnic groups, dialects, and religious practices that have shaped Afghan culture have created a rich combination of traditions. The country's rich background is reflected in its primary languages, Pashto and Dari (World Bank, 2021). Kabuli pilaf and Mantu are two examples of Afghan cuisine that stresses hospitality and group dining. Strong bonds and reverence for elders are essential principles that play a significant part in family life. In order to effectively and sensitively care for Afghan patients, healthcare professionals must have a thorough understanding of various cultural characteristics.

Reference: -

World Bank.
