Cultural Circumstances

I was born and brought up in Portland, Oregon and for this paper, I would like to reflect on this city that I have known since 2000. I have known it to be a diverse progressive community with a force that determines how people within it encounters social transformation. Activism runs deep in Portland because the city has supported civil rights campaigns alongside new efforts for both environmental sustainability and support of LGBTQ+ rights. I think social justice activism in Portland becomes primarily a task that younger residents take up while they lead efforts on racial equality as well as housing expenses and environmental sustainability. When you move around the city, you can witness that it contains a notable number of established citizens beyond age 50. Most notable is that the cultural divide between progressive supporters and resistant change opponents in the community exists which I think has made this community democratic and full of responsible citizens.

Historical Circumstances

I may not know much about its history but the community has rapidly changed from the time I have known it. I have heard stories of exclusionary practices from the past including racial segregation of neighborhoods together with discriminatory policies continue to impact the modern landscape of the city. My Grandpa who is now 85 years of age often recall Portland as an era where whites composed most of the population while working-class people-maintained dominance. Racial and cultural diversification throughout Portland has resulted in modern social transformations that present both difficulties and new possible solutions for advancement. It apparent now that past economic and social gaps in the city together with progressive reform movements may have significantly shape current interpretations and approaches within community change activities.

Environmental Circumstances

Without bias, I have viewed Portland as a city that focuses on sustainable development along with sustainable transport services and its dedication to environmentally friendly practices. Portland residents have reacted with both support and opposition towards environmental issues that include global warming alongside breathing problems and infrastructure developments. People older than fifty years in Portland witnessed the urban landscape transition from a heavy industrial city to an eco-aware governmental entity. The ongoing urban expansion causes residents to debate methods for achieving city growth while protecting natural landscapes. I have witnessed enforcement of waste management from households in our neighborhoods and this means that sustainability initiatives are working. Indeed, environmental efforts require reduction of carbon emissions and with such efforts, demand for social fairness which makes environmental discussions rather complicated would easily be addressed.
