Social Class Lens

How are class differences presented in the work? Are the characters aware or unaware of the economic and social forces that affect their lives?

The class differences are shown in various ways in the book. The author describes in detail, how she and her siblings don´t have proper beds like the rest of the kids, there wouldn't be food in the fridge like other families and the differences on the neighborhoods the would live in. The characters of the story are not fully aware of the economic and social forces that affect their lives. Rex is always gambling, drinking, making ¨investments¨ instead of saving money to buy essential and necessary things for his children. Rosemary only focuses on art, wasting her fortune for art supplies and neglecting her kids for her paintings. They both are aware that they don ´ t have money to be wasted but they still make wasteful purchases. The kids are the ones who are more aware of the economic and social forces that affect their lives.

Choose an event that happens in the reading that reveals a little bit about the author’s personality. Explain the passage and what has been revealed to you .

An event that happened in the reading that reveals a little bit about the author's personality is when she jumped in an alleyway near the LBJ Apartments. She came back to her apartment, her lips were busted and her knees and elbows were scraped. Her dad asked her what happened to her but she responded with a lie so her father wouldn´t be worried but be proud of her instead. The author's personality shows how she cares for her father.

What feelings or emotions does this book evoke for you? Choose a passage from the

reading that elicits a response from you and explain.

This book mostly provokes negative emotions and feelings. The story is mostly sad because of the way the author grew, along the story shes always moving and doesn´t have time to build close relationships or have a proper home. Her dad keeps insisting on a dream that his kids didn´t ask for it.

Choose a significant event that occurs in your reading. What do you think the author's purpose was in telling that part of the story?

An event in the story that was intriguing was when the fire burned down the hotel. The author mentions how the fire had been out to get her, wondering if all fires are related like her dad said all humans were related. The author is trying to explain how everything can be connected in a big world and at any moment everything can collapse. This could be foreshadowing of something that might be connected to the recent events that have been happening and will collapse at any moment.
