Taking Advantage of False Hope - The veterans Chrissie and Rodney claim to have found Ruth's possible in an office. Kathy has suspicions of their description of the woman, and it is implied that Chrissie and Rodney have some sort of ulterior motive in appealing to Ruth's hope of seeing her possible. In the same fashion, Ruth takes advantage of Chrissie and Rodney's interest in the possibility of Hailsham students getting deferrals, claiming to know details about the process when she actually does not.

"'Look, there are all kinds of things you don't understand, Tommy, and I can't tell you about them. Things about Hailsham, about your place in the wider world, all kinds of things. But perhaps one day, you'll try and find out. They won't make it easy for you, but if you really want to, really want to, you might find out.'" This is my favorite quote of the section because it foreshadows the novel's future events and how they connect to the current shrouds of mystery. Combined with Ms. Lucy's departure from Hailsham, this quote leaves me suspenseful as to what Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy will face after Hailsham in the outside world.

"Because somewhere underneath, a part of us stayed like that: fearful of the world around us, and—no matter how much we despised ourselves for it—unable quite to let each other go." This is my favorite quote because it drives home the strength of Kathy's Hailsham relationships and how their common upbringing formed a permanent connection. It also reminds that regardless of their outward attitudes, they still cling to their fleeting childhood and the memories associated with that time, almost like they are afraid of losing their identities with age.

Blind Assimilation - Everyone at the Cottages suffers from the influence of those they perceive to be better than them in some way; veterans idolize actors and characters on TV, so they copy their habits and behaviors as closely as they can. Consequently, Ruth, looking up to the veterans' cool maturity, adopts many of the habits and attitudes herself. Tommy, in turn, follows in Ruth's footsteps and plays along with her attempts to fit in, but even the veterans are unaware of their need to copy others to lift themselves higher up. Kathy seems immune to this effect, as she is the first to recognize the similarities between the veterans and television characters.

"I suppose, in general, I never appreciated in those days the sheer effort Ruth was making to move on, to grow up and leave Hailsham behind." This quote for me really exemplifies the difficulty of which moving on is. Ruth wants to move past Hailsham by letting go of her collection, and this paradigm of letting go is something that Kathy has to deal with.

Difficulty of letting things go-I believe my quote and Legolas' quote really highlights the consistent theme of the difficulty of letting go. Kathy and her friends all have a struggle of letting go of their past and we see this in the huddling that they do in Legolas' quote as well as Ruth's collection in mine. Broadly, this theme presents a unique dynamic along with the idea that loss is inevitable and the characters' insistence on clinging to their memories adds to this.

"Since each of us was copied at some point from a normal person, there must be, for each of us, somewhere out there, a model getting on with his or her life" (Ishiguro 106). In this quote, Kathy describes the veterans' 'possibles' theory. Although I do find the context of the situation interesting, I've been drawn to this quote because of its word choice. Kathy's impression of the "normal people" or "model" continues to alienate the people at the Cottages from the outside world.

Connection - While Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy transition to their life at the Cottages, it is apparent that their previous connection in Hailsham keeps them grounded. However, we begin seeing how characters leave their memories at Hailsham behind (Ruth donates her belongings and imitates the Veterans along with Tommy). Unlike the others, Kathy remains thoughtful of Hailsham which puts a strain on her friendship/connection with Ruth.
