“My anxiety doesn't come from thinking about the future but from wanting to control it.” — Hugh Prather, Notes to Myself

This quote proves relevant because it highlights the trepidation that serves as the primary conflict in the story. Daniel's father gets uneasy at the thought at facing his longtime rival while Daniel himself has to keep up with the pressure of not falling behind the team's efforts. The aspect of the quote that emphasizes control can be attributed to a game of chess, and how the father & son faced their fears by taking initiative.

Father - Demi Lovato

This song can be connected to the story because Daniel initially fails to understand why his father hid his status as grand-master from him. Daniel feels betrayed by this revelation, but grows increasingly sympathetic towards his father as the plot progresses and more about his father's past is revealed.

Viva La Vida - Coldplay

The song demonstrates the foolish nature of humans and the inevitable downfall that power brings. This is representative of Daniel's father in the story who retired himself from chess for 30 years due to the detrimental effects it had on his health. Daniel is a symbol for the damage that is necessary for reconstruction. In order for his father to face his past, Daniel had to make the mistake of getting lured into a parent-child chess game where his father could once again face his rival.

Keep it Together - Madonna

In order to cope with their anxiety, Daniel and his father supported each other throughout their endeavors in the tournament. The song represents this well by emphasizing the importance of family in the times of need. Every character displayed a great deal of empathy for their families. This can be shown when Daniel's mother & sister go all the way to New York to check on his father after learning about their difficulties.

In Grandmaster by David Klass, Daniel Pratzer is an timid high school freshman in a chess club filled with talented individuals. Daniel himself has only played chess for a couple months and only possesses basic knowledge of the game; furthermore, his presence is paled in comparison when standing before the 2 best chess players in his club. So it comes as a surprise when Daniel is suddenly invited to a parent-child chess competition. Daniel ponders the reason as to why the most popular kids in the school would invite him over to such a large event when he finally discovers that his father was a former chess grand master. Alarmed by the fact that someone so plain ordinary could have been hiding such a past, Daniel accepts the invitation in order to discover more about what his father has been hiding for 30 years. Mr. Pratzer on the other hand, must face up against his old rivals in order to conquer his history that has plagued him since the very moment he stopped playing.

So far New York has been interesting! It is very crowded and there is a lot of traffic. I suppose it could also be that I'm from New Jersey, but I was impressed by the hotels and food nonetheless.

Good Game @Liu1352! I was a little reluctant to meet you at first, but the game turned out to be thoroughly entertaining. I hope to have a rematch the next time I get to meet you.

I gotta say that it was an exhausting for a game that lasted an hour, going to chill at the pool with Britney after that one, hopefully I can keep up with this for the next few days. (That is, even if there are any "next few days")

I guess I'm just being awfully optimistic for a level D chess player. LOL
#NewYork #ChessTournament #Chess #Cringe
