         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Bonobo or the Pan paniscus lives in the Congo Rain Forests. The forest also houses elephants, gorillas, okapi, leopards, hippos, and lions due to its high levels of biodiversity. The Pan paniscus lives in fission-fusion societies meaning they move alone or in small groups. The chimpanzees eat mainly leaves, fruits, worms, insects, and sometimes small fish. In order to survive, the bonobos need habitat protection. Only a small portion of the forest is protected, therefore they are targeted. There are currently 10-20 thousand chimps in the wild. However, there used to be estimated three times today's population. The species is endangered due to poaching. An interesting fact about bonobos are that they share 98.7% of our DNA. They are almost like a tiny human!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Bonobos tend to be a pretty gentle species. They do not aggressively hunt mammals. Instead, they collect fruits, leaves, and dig up worms and insects. The Pan paniscus is an omnivore. This species gets its energy from its diet. They love to eat insects like larvae. The bonobo would be near the top of the energy pyramid, above leaves, fruits, and insects. However, the crocodile is above it. When one species eats another in an ecosystem, energy is transferred. The energy travels up every trophic level. Using the Pan paniscus as an example, energy goes from leaves and fruits up to small insects. Then energy travels from insects to the bonobo, and then up to eagles and crocodiles.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Biodiversity and Role in an Ecosystem</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The driving force of the Bonobo's endangerment is poaching. Due to their somewhat large size and minimally protected habitat, they are just sitting, waiting to be hunted. The endangerment is affecting species above them in the food web. Eagles and crocodiles cant survive on fruits, leaves, and insects alone. They need protein and energy that the bonobo's diet does not contain. Additionally, the species spreads seeds. They allow for a rich, diverse forest meaning more biodiversity. The Pan paniscus is considered a keystone species. They are vital to the ecosystem and should be valued highly. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Importance and Conservation Efforts</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In order to save the Pan paniscus, organizations like the bonobo conservative initiative are set in place. This initiative works to save bonobos, preserve their rain forest ecosystem, and empower local communities in the Congo basin. So far, the initiative has protected over 9 million acres in the Congo. Additionally, for more than 20 years they have collaborated with organizations, and the local community to protect the basin. Their efforts allow for the 15,000 bonobos living in the rain forest today. I think that the initiative is effective. They stuck to their word and did what they promised, and results have shown.</div>]]></description>
