Tip #1: Find a mentor

After taking interest in becoming a store manager with the Starbucks Coffee Company, I would like to have my manager be my mentor throughout the next couple of months as I work towards promotion. My store has recently shifted to a different manager and Nikki is definitely someone who is “working to make things happen" within the store (D'Souza, 2011). Within the past three weeks of my store manager Nikki being at our store, we as a whole have been able to achieve greater results and meet all key performance metrics and it has been shown through her hard work. With Nikki as my mentor, I would be able to receive feedback in the moment and gain knowledge in terms of learning how her leadership style has helped us be successful, all while making sure every employee feels supported. Alongside having my mentor by my side at all times, Nikki has provided me with so many tools to understand the role, and allowed me to attend district meetings, and work at other stores in order to shadow other managers and understand their leadership approach. All of these components will aid in my growth within the company and provide me with the tools needed to promote and become a successful store manager at Starbucks.

Tip #2: Bring out the best in yourself

I want to set myself up to be the best version of a manager I can possibly be. In order to do that I will be required to be “able to recognize what my special gifts and talents are” (D'Souza, 2011). By “taking a few moments out of my day to jot down what I do best”, I will be able to gain a better sense and understanding of myself (D'Souza, 2011). Having been able to identify some of my natural talents that I am “best” at which include listening to others, having good organization skills, and caring for others, I will be able to apply those towards my development and growth with the company. Without knowing at least a few of my natural talents (“bests”), I would/will not be capable of bringing out the best in myself as a person and potential manager of Starbucks. My sense of self will help me become the manager I want to be and need to be in order to support my employees, all while fostering a safe and welcoming environment.

Tip #3: Build your self-esteem

If I am going to be leading a store of my own someday, I must have good self-esteem. Certain behaviors such as “being kind to yourself; allowing yourself to be joyful, playful, and carefree; giving yourself a pat on the back and recognizing achievements; respecting yourself, your talents, your gifts; and acknowledging and accepting the challenges that will occur” will aid in alleviating some of the stress and worries that come with the role of a Starbucks manager (D'Souza, 2011). Having seen how much time and effort goes into being a manager, I can only imagine how hard it can be at times to keep your self-esteem high. If/once I become a Starbucks manager, I would like to take time throughout the week to reflect on all of my hard work and give myself that pat on the back for doing the best I possibly can, along with giving my team a pat on the back as well. Without implementing this into my weekly schedule, there is a possibility I will lose self-esteem and become very hard on myself for even the most minute of things.

Tip #4: Chart your life

Having always been a very go-with-the-flow person, I think taking the time to chart my life will help me see a clear picture and vision for my near future. Being a Starbucks manager is a short-term goal of mine, as I do have other aspirations and goals as well that I want to achieve and work towards as well. With the help of charting my life, I can visually see what the next five or so years of my life will look like. Charting my life includes three key components, “my mission, purpose, and passion; my personal values; and my strengths” (D’Souza, 2011). Once I can identify all of these components, creating a plan filled with both short-term and long-term goals, hopes, and dreams I will be able to see how I will achieve everything and the approximate time everything will be achieved. I would love to spend time charting my life because as someone who loves to be able to know what her future entails, I have not taken the time to the game plan. Once I make a game plan, I can hold myself accountable in terms of working towards a managerial role in Starbucks and ask my mentor for her input as well.

Being a Starbucks manager is something that I have recently decided I want, as my mentor has helped me see my potential with the company. With this being something I want, I need to “be willing to work hard, network and make connections, and take the initiative” (D’Souza, 2011). The Starbucks Careers website has made it so much easier for individuals to seize their opportunity because all positions are visible for everyone to see and apply. Once I feel I am ready to be interviewed/assessed for the manager role, I can take it into my own hands and apply myself. I do not need to wait for someone to tell me I am ready, instead I can decide for myself. Even if I do not get the position after my first interview, knowledge and a learning experience can be taken from it all. From there I can take any feedback and work on it until I am ready to apply for the position again.

I have a great understanding of what I want. Being surrounded by such a support team, along with a mentor who is eager for me to succeed in becoming a store manager. In order to achieve my goal of becoming a store manager, I need to plan and constantly “re-evaluate and stay up-to-date on the right choices to ensure that my goals and visions align as everything is constantly changing” (D’Souza, 2011). On a bi-weekly basis, I would like to revisit my goals and visions, along with re-evaluating whether my current actions are working towards or against those goals. By voicing my goals and visions with my mentor, I can also get a second opinion of my plan to see if she has any suggestions or alterations that could work better for me.

Changing can be a very difficult tasks keeping in mind that humans are creatures of routine. Being one of the two opening shift leads at my store, I am able to run the busiest part of day, along with feel strong and confident. While being able to run the busiest part of the day is important, when working towards a store manager role, I cannot neglect the other day parts. I would like to open up my availability and learn how each day part is run, and see what extra support and learning opportunities there are for each day part. While it is scary, I am motivated to become a manager and know that this is important to do. Changing from a day part where I feel my most strongest and most confident will be a great adjustment, but necessary if I want to take those next steps into a managerial role.

As a shift lead I am expected to perform to a certain standard and meet the standards and expectations of my manager and the Starbucks company. For the longest time, I kept work and my personal life very separate. I never shared any personal information with my coworkers and strictly stuck to helping the business succeed. I have learned that it is important to have friends and have fun even while working because “finding a friend or ally can help me enjoy the process” that much more (D’Souza, 2011). Over the past six months, I have made a few friends at my store and it makes my shifts so much better. I’ve noticed that it is important to have friends and have fun at work. Achieving goals is still plausible, if not more plausible because those who are working with you are more compelled to try harder and work better together. If/when I become a store manager I want to find a way to make my store an enjoyable place and create friendly, but respectful relationships with my employees in order to better all of our experiences.

Tip #8: Motivate yourself using loss aversion

I want to motivate myself using loss aversion. If I were to make a mistake in my current shift lead role, the consequences are not as grand as they would be of a manager. Taking on more responsibility (Starbucks manager) equals more of an opportunity to make a mistake and mess up because the business is in your hands. All of the mistakes, including the mistakes of my employees fall onto me. The responsibilities of a Starbucks manager are greater and there is more of an area for errors to be made. There is the potential for my career to be at risk if I were to make a mistake such as putting my salary, benefits, and bonuses into jeopardy; however, the risk is worth the opportunities this managerial role entails. I want to continue to motivate myself to use loss aversion and remove any barriers that prevent me from taking this “leap of faith” (risk) by working towards and stepping into a managerial role with Starbucks.
