In 1938, the first ballpoint pen was invented by Hungarian journalist Laszio Biro, however the first patent belonged to John Loud in 1888.

Each BIC^® ballpoint pen produces more than 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) of writing.

When they were first on the market, the Reynolds Rocket—America's first ballpoint pen—sold for $12.50 (about $150 today).

The first patent for a ballpoint pen was issued on 30 October 1888 to John J. Loud, who was attempting to make a writing instrument that would be able to write "on rough surfaces-such as wood, coarse wrapping-paper, and other articles" which then-common fountain pens could not.
