More disruptive than ever.

With phones, teachers could tell students to put them away. Without phones, the kids are doing the same things on their chromebooks which can't be put away.

Lots of students are bringing decoy phones to school. They hand in their decoy phone and take their real one to the bathroom to use.

No change in violence because there is still very little punishment for bullies. Heavy punishment for phones though!

Unsafe schools

Schools remain to be unsafe no matter what the province is saying that they are doing. Students come to school knowing that there is little consequence for their behaviours.

The phone ban has made a huge difference in terms of classroom disruptions, insubordination, and bullying incidences. It’s the most influential thing the dept of ed has done to actually support schools in recent years, in my opinion.

Bathrooms are EXTREMELY unsafe in high schools - drugs, vaping, sex.

Phones are still in the bathrooms often.

Many students are scared.

Students well aware there are no staff around to watch them or protect them

Admin are slow to respond to incidents (it is taking months because teachers are logging so many situations of violence and insubordination)

Hallways unsupervised

Without teachers on duty, as they were with 6 of 8, the hallways in high schools are still unsupervised. It’s a free for all. The same students roam the halls, cause issues in the bathroom and avoid classes but nothing is done because no adult is present to deter them and send them back to class. Admin is either busy or unwilling to supervise the halls.

The cell phone ban has been great at addressing behaviour/engagement in the classroom- it’s the rest of the building that is still an issue. The # of adult bodies in the hallways at high schools is so low, the kids know it and they don’t respect/respond to the support staff who are in the halls. Bringing back 6 of 8 and having teachers who know the students and have relationships with the students would have a huge impact.

My autistic kid refuses to use the bathroom at his high school because the first three times he went there were kids smoking in the stalls and no toilet paper. He feels unsafe there. Friends say their neurotypical kids also avoid the bathroom. Not healthy for kids to be holding it all day.

Completely Unsafe

Schools remain completely unsafe. Problematic children expelled from one school get transferred over to the next school for them and their school community to deal. Racism is extremely prevalent at so far for our family both the elementary school and middle school levels. Not much appears to be done about it. There is zero representation in our schools (Cves & Astral) supposedly prime teaching positions. Gun threats have also occurred in both schools so far this year with at least two at Astral. Police are called in regularly. Children do not feel safe as often when issues of racism and bullying are related the students are told to stay away from said child, you know he has anger issues and a learning disability. We need to have these children transferred to a school set up to handle this level of behavioral challenges. Integration with these extreme behaviorally challenged students is not the option when schools across the province remain as understaffed as they are. There is not enough supervision or supports in place to keep our children safe. And now they have no way to contact an adult safely when they are stuck in an unsafe situation with no support as we have banned cell phones. Serious changes need to take place within HRCE. The first step is acknowledging that this is happening regularly, even at the what we would consider some of the best schools in the province.

Cellphones rules ..

I don’t like how a provincial mandate was left up to the administration to make their own plan . Cellphones should be kept in the students locker and taken out on class change or lunch . My school has teachers doing most of the work for monitoring cellphones .. as if we don’t already have a Thanksgiving size meal stacked on top of a dessert plate ..

It should be this simple = see a cell phone? Go to the office.

Why is it that a teenager caught vaping in a classroom (gasp because this does happen )or bathroom not fined for breaking the law ?

I can’t imagine they vape at their places of work or on the bench with their sports teams …

Why are male students who are caught sending dick pics not charged with sexual harassment ? Or even suspended ?

Adults are not allowed to flash themselves in public without strict consequences and maybe being put on a list ..

Male students send pics of their privates.. videos of them masterbating and get to still show up to school , show their faces in the halls and sit next to students who they just victimized ?

I’ve reported cases to my male admin team and nothing has been done .

Parents should ask their child .. yes child who has access to social media apps if they have ever been sent a dick pic ? Some of my female students reported seeing their first dick pic as early as grade 5!

Admin seems to pick and choose who they feel gets to stay and go ?

Students see it .

It’s a joke .

Kid comes every day , does nothing , causes a disturbance , and is expected to pass. Student who shows up every odd day , is silent , puts their head down and Grinds out several missing assignments … and they are the problem ?

Code of conduct

I was told “ don’t mention the code of conduct to (insert admin name here) because that makes them angry .

Admin have been making their own rules for years . Not Logging things , not suspending kids , but having them Sit in the office for a block ? Give me a break !

Example: I witnessed a kid bully another .. I heard their words , watched them make a gun with their hand ,point it at a kid and threaten to shoot them , and I had a crumbled up note .. so hand written evidence .

The bully ? Not suspended . Sat in the office the next day instead of attending class , and was allowed back in the next day .

Make it make sense ??

Police called to school?

Park View Education Centre has a police officer in the school. I was told he walks the hallways, stands outside the washrooms and escorts students to the office when there is a serious matter. My kid used to be nervous and scared to go to school in Junior High now they don't find a reason to miss the school bus.

Consider this.

Your 3-5 year old child does not follow under the code of conduct policy for violence. Why? We are seeing violence and destruction of property toward children and staff and environment at this age and there are ZERO supports for your child or staff members. What happened to no tolerance? The programs are jam packed full of diversities that cannot be supported within this program and high quality trained staff are leaving. This is just a very small piece of the story. I encourage parents to ask questions and ensure their children are actually gaining something out of this program.

Violence is higher than ever

So far this year I’ve been assaulted more than thirty times, been bitten kicked, spit on, punched, slapped, pinched, hair ripped out and given a concussion. There’s more, we have teachers out on stress leave, traumatized students, traumatized behaviour specialists, epas quitting and taking leave, adults crying daily, kids running out of the buildings, stealing, trashed electronics and classrooms, property damaged but don’t worry, they go to the office for a game after.

Cell phone policy is effective. Very solid addition. Attendance policy doesn't get followed. It's a pick and choose model. Some get tossed at 20 absences some get to have 45. Need consistency. Bathrooms are a mess. Not safe for kids, teens know there is no consequences so they just loiter, vape, harass, smoke weed etc. It is a race to the bottom in terms of academics. It keeps getting easier every year. No one holds students accountable. Everyone passes. No one learns how to be responsible independent students. Good luck at post secondary. The push needs to be for consistent consequences. Make good kids feel safe, and if you don't meet the outcomes, you get to try again with supports. Getting a 50 and moving on does more harm than good.

Constant harassment

There are a group of students at ADJH that are constantly harassing other students. Admin goes through the useless code of conduct and then the same students continue the behaviour. It is utterly disgusting and disgraceful for the children who want to attend the school peacefully, get their work done, and get out of there. The school is ineffective in their approach in trying to “manage” the students. Absolutely disgusting. Let’s stop making excuses for violence and constant harassment.
