These two people are the reason I am the person I am today. They have been there for me through the thick and thin. I have never once felt alone when facing hardships as I know they will always be there to listen or to cry with me. Although we get into arguments, they are never left unresolved. Their unconditional love has taught me that family is something that should never be taken for granted but that I should never question if my family loves me. They have helped shape my political and moral views but have also allowed me to disagree with some of theirs and to shape my own. They have allowed me to have so many opportunities and to live such a fortunate life.

Mom
My mom, the strongest woman I know, has taught me to never settle for less than I deserve. She taught me to be proud to be a woman and to fight for what I believe in. My mother is the reason I know just how much power words can hold. She has also taught me the importance of hard work. Working late nights and a job that isn't as rewarding as it once, she has shown me that sometimes we do things we don't like or want to in order to provide for your family. Because of that I know not to expect anything if I do not work for it.

Dad
My dad has showed me the true meaning behind doing anything for your family. He has sacrificed a lot to make my family happy (including retiring; he's 71!). A quiet and, for the most part, reserved man, my dad only wants the best for his children. He is the main reason I am able to go to such an amazing school; he was the one who convinced my mom. Without that, I would be a very different person.

They are the perfect shoulders to cry on. They know exactly when I need to vent just by my facial expressions or body language. They are able to make me happy even on the worst days. They have given me some of the best advice (and some of the worst) which I will forever cherish. These two amazing women have grown with me and two people I aspire to be.

My soccer teams have given me many things. However, the two that I will always cherish are confidence and responsibility. Many soccer players do not stay on the same team their entire career. Instead, the move two a different team once they outgrow the old one. I have been on seven different teams (including high school). This means that I have had to start over seven different times; having to prove myself, make new friends, and start at the bottom each time. From this, I have learned how to believe in myself and my athleticism. I have also learned how to not be afraid to make new friends. My teams have also taught me responsibility. Being on a team in and of itself calls for responsibility. It demands you come to practice two or three times a week and to go to the games. But that's not the responsibility I am talking about. I have been the captain of three of my teams.. I have to be the leader of the team and set an example for the younger or new players. I have had to stay after practice to talk with the coach about the team's needs or specific players.

"we need to stop building our churches around categories and start building them around people." (Evans, p. xiii-xiv)

This quote resonates with me because I think that a lot of churches and the people that have power within the church try to base their teachings and what kind of church they want to be one categories and less on the people. The people are what make the church not their sexual orientation, gender, race etc. The church is supposed to be for the people so it should be based around the people.

"sometimes we are closer to the truth in our vulnerability than in our safe certainties,” (Evans, xvi)

I liked this quote because I believe that there is strength within our vulnerability. I think being able to completely open up or say "I don't know who I am or what is going on" allows you to open up and get ready to accept new things. When we close ourselves up (our safe certainties) we only allow ourselves to accept what we know or what we are comfortable with. However, when we become vulnerable and accept that we don't have all the answers, or any, then we are prepared to accept/try new things.

“I prefer a church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security " (forward)

I know this quote is actually by Pope Francis but I liked that she put it into the book because it really sets the readers up for how this author approaches the Church. I really liked this quote. It really reminded me of what the last priest said in his homily. Churches are not supposed to be spotless and conventionally beautiful. I find a church that is dirty or old to be more beautiful. It shows history and that the church has been there for a while and is not going anywhere. Churches are supposed to go out into the real world and make a difference. They are supposed to help the poor and homeless not just the rich, clean folks that come on Sundays. The church should struggle as much as everyone else.

When I was very young, too young to remember, my mom had me baptized in a Presbyterian church. From what my mom has told me, the majority of my family was there. Including my two god mothers (who are married to each other) and my two god fathers (who are also married to each other). Since I can't remember much from it I don't it had a huge impact on me. However, knowing that a church allowed my two sets of god parents who are all gay and one (my god fathers) are Jewish is a reminder that not all churches are narrow-minded or open and accepting to everyone. It reminds me that there is not "one type" of church.

As soon as I turned 16, I went to the DMV and took my driver's test. Thankfully, I passed. Being able to drive gives you such a feeling of freedom. You are able to drive where and when you want and blast the music as loud as you want. Additionally, it gives you a sense of responsibility. You are responsible for refueling your car and getting it washed. You are also responsible for driving at the speed limit and not breaking the law. It's a good snippet of adult hood.

The song that I think best describes me is "Little Me" by Little Mix. Although I don't listen to it as much as I used to in Middle School, I think it perfectly represents who I am now vs who I was then. The singers talk about how they wish they could tell their younger selves to be proud of who they were and are and to speak up and be heard. When I was younger I was a lot quieter and shyer that I am today. If I were to talk to my younger self I would definitely tell her to speak up and not be afraid to voice your opinions. And that those opinions are one hundred percent valid.
