During my childhood, my dad always made sure he took me to visit important historical places throughout Mexico. He wanted to ensure that I knew about my Mexican heritage, and knew about the history behind these amazing historical places. From all of the historical places that I have visited, my favorite one is The Castle of Chapultepec. It was built in 1725 for Bernardo de Galvez, who was the Commander in Chief of a spanish colony. The

hilltop was chosen as the site of the residence of the Spanish viceroy in 1783. Construction of the castle began but was stopped after four years. The castle was later abandoned for a long period of time during the Mexican War when they wanted to achieve Independence. For a period of time, it became a military academy for young soldiers.

It became famous and known as the place of death of the six heroic cadets. On September 13, 1847, they died defending the castle of Chapultepec during a battle of the Mexican-American war. It is said that one of these young men, named Juan Escutia, wrapped himself inside the Mexican flag and jumped from the top of the castle. Escutia believed that by doing so, the enemy would not take the flag and conquer. Not only is it one of the few castles in North America, it is one of the only castles thats has had foreigners live in the castle. It is nice to see how Chapultepec has evolved throughout the centuries. It was used in many differents ways, from a military academy, a home to Mexico’s presidents, a battle site, to now one of the nation’s most beloved historical site.
