I found the "Race Video" to be especially meaningful. This video is a profound visual representation of unearned privilege and the systems of oppression which it allows to exist.
What initially sparked my thinking was the beginning of the video when I observed those who were taking almost every step forward, moving closer to the $100. These individuals would look to those beside them who were moving closer to the reward as well. This majority group of people were laughing and enjoying the activity. They weren't looking back at the individuals who were still back on the starting line, or close by it. There was a stark difference in affect and body language between the two groups. The group closest to, or on the starting line, appeared disappointed, dismissed, embarrassed, and increasingly helpless. This video challenged me to examine the lack of effort on the part of the privileged, to recognize our unearned advantages and work to close the gap. I feel that as the privileged group, not enough is being done past the initial recognition or awareness. As a school counselor, I plan to use this "spark" toward leveling opportunity for disadvantaged students while eliminating any barriers to equity.
