Here is a wondering (because I have done it both ways) I like that we have WICOR partners, a different partner to share, the more people to get to know, but with such a short time together (3 days) I also think there is value in having a general study buddy one that they really get to know over the 3 days rather than a new one or two each day. It takes time to get to the level of "jumping" right into the conversation. Just a thought.

I notice we have a whose in the room poster and talk about it a few times then by the collaborative social norms contract it says they are in home groups but did not notice any time where we ask them to pack and stack and move? I notice that they are in grade level on day 2, does this mean they are not in those groups till day 2?

4 Stages of Relational Capacity

How can we share the purpose behind the 4 stages of relational capacity without eating up too much time? I feel like this is super important to have a conversation about. Over the past few years, I have noticed this portion of the first few weeks of school gets skimmed over because of curriculum, testing etc. From my experience we assume teachers understand how critical this is to the rest of the school year, yet many skip it because they either feel they are losing time or they really don't understand what relational capacity means and what it looks like.

During the ENGAGE section it says that participants will use the text (pg 6 of AVID Reading for Disciplinary Literacy book) but does not clearly say handout pg 6. I found this a little confusing as a facilitator. It does say this in the facilitator course.

Are all the "sparks" options in the lower tables going to remain pre-k-k and 1-2? I know we can encourage the conversation around how to continue the scaffold, but I'm preparing for some of the upper elementary teachers to have questions about specific sparks for their grade bands.

Explicit Outline of Marking the Text

I wonder if we could be more explicit in what we would like them to mark up on the critical reading handout to model what may happen in the class. Quick example:

Number the paragraphs/chunks (we have 7 chunks)
Circle the 6 title components under the 3 phases
Underline the intent of each component
Add any questions in the margins that you may have confusion or wonderment about

May give a better understanding of being very explicit in this process to ensure all students have the same understanding of outcome and create a level playing field.

The directions on the eLearning page say to complete the sort with home groups, however, it might be nice to change that to an independent initial sort (like stated in the syllabus) to allow for healthy productive struggle time, add then a second step abut processing with your home groups using the sentence frames.

Transforming the Learning Experience

Number 2 on the listicle directions asks participants to to indicate the FOI component connection. The examples in parenthesis are: (Appropriate Environment, Learning Objectives, or Positive Environment). The last environment should be positive relationships.

Page Duplications - This might just be a glitch in the matrix on my end, but when advancing forward in the course it appears that the following pages on Day 3 are duplicated:

A few "detail" questions

After table groups make the successful student/teacher, there is a gallery walk for 2 minutes. I can see this taking longer...I know there's time not accounted for in the syllabus, is this a place where we might take a little more time?
From 8:50-9:15, they do a resource dive (1/2 table doing FNT and other 1/2 doing Reflective Writing). I recall from last year, that we need to be specific with directions as one group has 20 pages to look at and the other group has 60 pages to look at. Maybe we should discuss how to best set this up for success.
9:15-9:55 for The Critical Reading Process, there's 10 minutes allotted for the the Engage section of the syllabus. Under that 10 min, there is a 5 minute share out with their study buddy. Is that 5 min in addition to the 10 min or a portion of the 10 min? I think it's a portion of the 10 min but just want to confirm. =)

In the Google form one of the questions led with..."take note of the color-coding used to reiterate the Foundations of Instruction: Clear Learning Objectives formula." I did notice that FOIs were not color coded, unless its the purple. What is the FOI color code color?

Be mindful of the room needs, but also keep guiding them at a perky pace. Allow them to make the connections, and leave them wanting to dive deeper later. The sparks and deeper dive connections will help them to revisit their notes and make it more meaningful.
