This font is from a poster that one of my friend's got for another friend. I'm not sure where they bought it from, but I saw it on the wall and had to take a photo! The thing that stood out to me the most was the serifs on the letters. The serifs are clean and sharp and add a very pleasant visual to the letters to make them stand out, but not too much to distract from the actual poster.

I saw these paints while looking for paper for my drawing final, and loved the design! I think it's so fun and unique. I love the asymmetry and the way the letters sit in front of each other. I like how blocky it is, but it also has varying widths and lengths within the letters, like the two lines protruding from the F. The font reminds me of like an old style videogame, which is probably why I liked it so much.

This is a poster near the student commons building I saw walking to class one day. I love the graphic looking art style, for the whole poster and the text really brings it all together. It looks handwritten, and I love how it flows across the composition. The style of the font really matches the message of the poster, especially the PROTECT and NO NEW DRILLING in big letters.

This store is near my friend's apartment, and I love the design of the logo on the door! The swirling accents around the words look so good and matches the words really well. The round, looping serifs on the V especially pair with the swirling lines. I like how long the tracking is in the word "Village" compared to the other words, it makes it stand out, and makes it feel open. The font for the other words around village are nice and simple compared to the dynamic cursive of the word village, and the pair compliment each other nicely.

I passed by this tattoo parlor going to get food, and totally fell in love with it. All of the typefaces they used on this storefront go together so nicely. The use of both bold and cursive strokes being used add interest to the words, but it isn't distracting. The word "Salvation" has so many beautiful decorative features within it, like the triangles in the counters of the A's and O's. I also love the little pointed tips in the serifs in the font in Salvation.

The narrow counters in the Os and Ps make the font look more unique. The san serif font used underneath "Paisanos" is a nice contrast with the font used in the name. I also really like how long the stems are for the font underneath, it makes the whole text line feel very vertical and tall.

The swash on the G's are really pretty, and I love the use of the ball terminal on the end of them. The big rounded serifs on the rs pair with it nicely. I also really like the dynamic feel of the strokes in the letters, like how it gets thinner and thicker in different areas of the letter. The swirl in the lower counter in the S looks great and matches the gs perfectly. I like how the foot on the n, r, and i are thick but end in a sharp point, it reminds me of calligraphy :)

This paper was taped to a building I was walking past one day and I instantly recognized things about it that needed to be fixed. For one, there is no variation in the use of fonts, colors, or sizing. It's just a giant block of black text with no real interest to it. There's no sense of hierarchy or importance in any of it. Some of the lines of texts have bigger indents then others, which creates awkward spaces around the body of text. All in all, there is definitely room for improvement.

This chinese restaurant is near a print shop a friend wanted to go to, and the sign they have above the door stuck out to me, but not in a good way. The tracking for the second line of text is very squished, and it makes it hard to read. It doesn't make sense to me that they would use a more decorative font for the text beneath the name of the restaurant compared to the title of the business. The serifs on the second line of text make the tracking even more hard to look at. Everything feels very squished together, and the design of the sign doesn't really match my idea of a Chinese restaurant.

This sign was outside of one of the art buildings on VCU campus, and I still can't fully decide how I feel about it. The strokes of the text is quite thin, and it's hard to read unless you are quite close to the sign. However, I think the design and aesthetic of the sign is really unique and interesting. It feels very modern and artistic. The typeface for the titles is very decorative, with long descenders and very open bowls, counters, and apertures. The font used for the names, dates and locations, and really nice. The bowls are very round, but the letters are quite boxy, especially the shoulders on the ns, ms, and hs. The tail of the gs are really unique, and I like how small they are compared to the top. Each of the titles of each section has a really cool special character as a design element, like the T and N in Painting and Printmaking. While the text is sort of hard to read from a distance, up close I do think the sign is really unique and clearly had a lot of thought put into it.

This is a souvenir I got from visiting Luray Caverns, and I have some likes and dislikes. I think the font they used for the "What will you discover?" is pretty, but a little distracting combined with the picture behind it. The swashes in the "What" are nicely done, but the cross stroke in the t reaches really far into the next word, and makes it a little hard to separate the words while reading it. Maybe the kerning between the words could be higher, but I think I would just remove that whole line of text altogether. The portion of text on the bottom of the page, however, I do really like. The font matches well with the overall vibe of the cavern. I like the ascending aspect of the L and C in the words, and I like the triangular serifs. The curvy stroke in the leg of the R is a nice touch too. I would probably also increase the leading for the bottom portion of text, but overall I like the book design.

I saw this poster on a powerline on the corner of the street, and it immediately got my attention. The bold, 3D text is eye-catching and the shadows it has makes it easy to read against the background. The typeface is very unique and not something you see everyday. I love the tiny counters in the B, P, and A, and how there is a thin line of space that connects them to the open space around the text. I also like how the lowercase t has more of an arm than a cross bar since the stroke doesn't fully cross the stem. The lowercase s from this font is a teeny bit hard to read, especially in the smaller text, but I still like the overall look of the whole poster.

This plaque was at a petting zoo I went to! The first thing that stood out to me about the sign was the embellishment from the descender of the C letters that connected to other parts of the word. I think it adds an interesting element to the typeface for sure. I also love how the counters in the letters differ so much from one another, like how the E, N, and H have more space between the bar and the bottom of the letter compared to the bar and the top of the letter. I also like the swash in the T of the word The, and how the bottom of the stroke curls to match it. I also like how boxy the serifs are in the words Chicken Coop, it contrasts nicely with the roundness of the rest of the typeface. Super cute sign, and I love the chicken drawing!

This book was in the art supply store, and there is so much going on in the design that I knew I had to write about it. I think the main problem with this is that the colorful and busy design of the background behind the text makes it hard for the writing to stand out. Other than the clashing design elements, I actually really like the typeface used to write the title of the book, "Printmaking unleashed." I like that each letter looks different from one another, like a collage. It definitely fits the look of the book. Despite the letters being their own fonts, the unified coloring and the kerning, tracking, and lettering look super nice so the words are still easy to read and understand. The title of the book stands out from the background enough due to its size, but the other text gets pretty lost. If the background was more simplified, I think this would be a much better design because the typography is actually really cool to me!

I think it's hard to make a professional looking product with the word "krazy" in it while matching the name, but I think they nailed it with this. The kerning is so small the letters touch each other, but the tracking is not small enough that it feels crowded or hard to read. The ascender on the K contrasts nicely with the descender on the y, making a nice frame for the word. I also like how the word glue fits between the space between the A and Y. I think the A being the only capital letter as well as being very tilted fits the name 'krazy' nicely. I also love the U in superglue being connected to the chain links!

I think the words "Family" "World" and "Love" should probably be bigger since there's a lot of emphasis on them. I also think the top of the L being between "created by" makes it a bit awkward. I really like the font used in the word family. I like how wavy the arms that come out of the letters, like in the F, L and Y. I also really like the rounded terminals on the M and A. The diamond shaped counter in the A is so unique! I also like the font used in the word World. and how the embellishments match the ones used in other parts of the sign, like the tree. I like how the M strokes tapers as it moves away from the apex, and how it's asymmetrical and tilted towards the right. In contrast, the O next to it is a perfect circle, which makes for an interesting design. I also like how the leg of the M is the bar for the A. The one thing that's a little weird is the dot above the N makes it seem like there would be another i there, but the only i in the name is right after the D. I also wish there was more information/text on the front, because I didn't know what the business was until I googled it.

I saw this container in my friend's room and was surprised at how nicely done the type on the cup was! The top of the C swirling down with the little ball terminal looks so cute, and I like how the stroke of the bottom of the C tapers off bluntly. I also like how the stroke on the left side of the U is bigger than the stroke on the right. I like how the counter in the P isn't fully closed either. The little accents in the os that swirl into the counter look really nice too. I like how big the shoulder on the D is, and how it goes past the straight stem. I like the shape of the negative space the middle arm of the E makes with its serif. I also love how some of the letters sit in front of each other because of the small kerning. The way the orange outline actually fits and wraps around the letters is a great detail!

This sign is in my friend's apartment lobby, and I think it's well done but there is some room for improvement. You can't really tell from the picture, but the sign is pretty small, so I would remove one of the graphics to make more room for the text. I would also make the words "from these premises will lead to" smaller, and make the remaining words bigger to have more of an impact. I also think the name of the apartment building could be removed to make the other text bigger. I do like the color palette though!

This sign was in a shop I walked past to get to the bus stop, and I love it's design! I really like the color palette they used throughout the poster, including how they used it in the text. I like how the color of the outlines in the title corresponds with the fill color of the smaller text in the other part of the poster. I also like how they organized the composition, so you can clearly get a sense of how your eye should follow and process the information. I like how they made the dates almost just as big as the names of the speakers so it stands out, but because the color and font aren't as demanding, so your eye still knows to read the names first. The smaller text between the names and dates makes a nice variation in the paragraphs. All in all, the entire composition is very nice on the eyes and I really like the style of the poster!

This poster was on a traffic light post at a crosswalk that caught my eye. I really like the composition of the entire poster, with dates posted on the same line as the title, so your eye will quickly see the important dates, but it doesn't distract from the actual title. The font they used for this poster is so unique! The shapes of the counters is so groovy and unique, and the strokes in the letter taper nicely in certain part to make the text seem more dynamic. Like in the R, the stroke is thin near the apex at the top, but gets thicker as it goes down the stem and leg. In the T the stroke does a same thing, and has a nice curve to it as well, which makes it such a pretty character. I love how the counter in the q is a tilted oval and how the descender is almost a rectangle, it's very unique. I do wish the part at the top that said "Free show" was a bit bigger.

I saw this sticker on the side of a large dumpster on the sidewalk, and I absolutely love the typeface used to write "Thrift World". The way the designer had the text warp to fit the curve of the top of the circle looks great. The swash that extends from the bottom foot of the t is a great decorative touch. I like how the sharp serifs create such a nice round crotch where the bar of the T meets the stem. There is a similar effect in the H where the right leg rounds out and meets the crossbar, then wraps inwards towards the bottom. It creates an interesting counter. I also really love the W and how the serifs on the top almost connect with one another. The font style is so beautiful, it reminds me of Art Nouveau. I do wish the Earth day was a bit easier to read, but the light yellow blends in with the light blue. I do like how they composited the information in little paragraphs on the side.

I passed by this store one day and really liked the sign! The M in Metro especially stood out to me. The serifs on the top of the apexes come really close to touching, and make an interesting V shape in the counter. I like how the feet on the bottom of the strokes are wavy instead of just straight squares as well. I really like how the serifs look on the cross bar of the T, they way it goes up and down looks like little horns! The leg on the R descends and swoops down nicely, and almost wraps around the o, which looks great. I also love how the counter in the cs look almost halfway filled. I also like how in Music Co, the M and O ascend so much past the cap line. The orange rust color for the smaller text doesn't stand out too much because it's kind of dark, but other than that I do like the color palette. The little decorative banner that surrounds the orange text is so cute!

This sign was on a donation bin, and while I love the message behind it, the design isn't great. There is a lot going on in the entire thing, so I just cropped it to the parts that stood out to me the most. Even cropped, the design is still way too distracting. The tracking for a lot of the text is just way to squished, and makes it hard to read. There is also a lot of different fonts being used, including what looks like comic sans, which is just so bad looking. The text is organized in a way that it is really hard to follow and know what to read next, like that weird sideways text in the top. The word "Landfill" being laid over on that image of the trash looks so bad, and the random recycling sign next to it doesn't help. Why is the "And" so big compared to other, more important text? I simply do not know. The indents in the bottom box make everything feel so squished. All the text fits so awkwardly in the space, and it all clashes for your attention. I like the idea behind the text "growing" but its too dramatic and just looks so weird. There is simply so much going on with this. It needs to be simplified and reorganized for sure.

I saw this sign above a door and I think the design is so classy! It definitely matches the vibe of the building and business. The tracking is very long, but I think it works really well, especially for the "Renaissance" The kerning is also really long for the other words, but it looks great, and doesn't make it hard for the eye to read. I think the spacing really helps the eye understand the boundaries between the words. I also love the R in Renaissance! The stem is a beautiful swirl with a great ball terminal, and contrasts nicely with the arrow straight leg. I also love the swash coming out of the top of the R. The sign is simply, classy, and is a great example of good tracking and kerning.

I saw this piece of paper taped to the wall of some VCU building, and had to do a double take to even realize there were words on it! This is so hard to read, especially the text in the lower half of the paper. It blends into the background way too much because of the color, and also because the font is not easy to read at all. A really random thing about this that bothers me is the quotation marks around the word "Last" because it doesn't match any of the font in the poster at all. It's a shame because I think the typeface for the words in the top half is actually really pretty, but it is so hard to read because of the design of the poster. There is also little information to tell us what we are even reading, like I have no idea what this piece of paper about. It doesn't help that there isn't really a sense of typographical hierarchy either. I really don't know how this design was approved because it's just so hard to read!!

This sign was in a window in a bookstore, and I love it's design! The vibe is so surrealist looking, it reminds me of the Truman Show for some reason. Anyways, I think the text is done super well on this poster. The 3D letters with the bold black shadows looks great, and contrasts nicely with the thin strokes of the fonts used to write "fest". I also love how the 3D letters overlap one another because of the kerning. The fonts in the bottom half of the poster mirror the top, as they have one bold font and one thinner one. I do think the leading could be increased just a bit for the bottom half of the poster, but the words are definitely still readable and nice to look at. I love how they spaced out the names in the thinner font, and the font is great. It's simple, open, and very legible. I spacing between the words forms great spaces for the eyes to rest, and I like the shape of the body for the text a lot. The fonts match the vibe really well, and this poster is a great balance between decorative and practical.
