The narrator is trying to tell us the story of Joe Louis and his fight to represent the strength and persistence of the African-American community. One piece of textual evidence is “and it looks like Louis is going down.’ My race groaned.”. This piece of evidence supports what the narrator is trying to say because the black race groaned when Joe fell, showing that every black person felt the pain of Joe Louis. The lesson the narrator wants to teach is that we can always fight against oppression and injustice if we’re strong enough.

The theme of Champion of the world by Maya Angelou in my opinion, is embrace anything negative and use it to help you succeed in anything you do. I said this because the text states “ This might be the end of the world. If Joe lost we were back in slavery and beyond help. It would all be true; the accusations that we were lower types of human beings. Only a little higher than apes. True that we were stupid and ugly and lazy and dirty and unlucky and worst of all, that God himself hated us and ordained us to be hewers of wood and drawers of water, forever and ever, world without end.”(Angelou). This relates to the theme because it's referring to how Joe Louis was supposed to win the fight because he was being pushed into it and he knew that if he didn't win he would let his people down and this could have pushed him to do his best. As a result he tried and won and due to him being a lot more motivated he was able to with the fight and was admired.

The author is trying to tell us to not give up because it can mean so much to the people around us. Maya Angelou was saying in the story how badly black people were treated. The text states, “It was another lynching, yet another Black man hanging on a tree. One more woman ambushed and raped. A Black boy whipped and maimed. It was hounds on the trail of a man running through slimy swamps. It was a white woman slapping her maid for being forgetful” (Angelou, para. 14). But, she also said how much Joe Lewis winning meant to the entire race. The text states, “Joe Louis had proved that we were the strongest people in the world” (Angelou, para. 26). Because Joe Lewis didn’t give up when the odds were against him, he won and his entire race behind him.

She showed us that it gets hard in a world with racism, and that that fight meant more than just winning. It proved that Joe Louis, a black man, is worth just as much as his competition, a white man.
The narrator is trying to tell us that you can do anything you put your mind to. I know this because Mika anganlu speaks about everybody sweating cheering have different feels on the fight.. They needed joe luis to win the fight. If was for the good of the people. They didn't want black people to be known as those dirts useless type of people. But they wanted to be known as the best people. People were squished in a store just to hope to see history happen.”“And now it looks like Joe is mad. He’s caught Carnera with a left hook to the head and a right to the head. It’s a left jab to the body and another left to the head. There’s a left cross and a right to the head.” Joe puts his head in the game he dose everything in his power to beat that man. To prove the wight people wrong that blacks are a type a people there not just there to work and get beet. To be owed. There on this earth because there just like the wights. They have feeling and names. They both have the same goal to live a great life. Never give up and keep going and never stop if its something you love.

Megan James My belief is that Champion of the world is written through the eyes of Maya Angelou with the intention of inspiring people and helping them understand what it was like with the segregation set inplace. She shows this through the moving words of “This might be the end of the world. If Joe lost we were back in slavery and beyond help. It would all be true; the accusations that we were lower types of human beings. Only a little higher than apes. True that we were stupid and ugly and lazy and dirty and unlucky and worst of all, that God himself hated us and ordained us to be hewers of wood and drawers of water, forever and ever, world without end.” (Angelou). This shows that it was tough being a black person during these times by inferring that if Joe last the fight he would just be proving all the assumptions and events that happen or are about the black community.
