Closing Module 2: Journal

Culture and diversity are very important factors. Understanding your culture is part of your identity. It is part of who you are, your beliefs and values.
Diversity exists within any cultural group. A part of the population can be divided into subgroups. For example Latinos, although we share a common heritage, we have different cultural backgrounds and practices that provide us with a unique perspective.

Learning and understanding other cultures makes us richer in knowledge and values. Keeping an open mind and being willing to learn new things and traditions is an important trait to have. Spending time with people all around the world and getting out of your comfort zone is important for being a more diverse person. In my opinion, the more you open yourself to people from different countries and different cultures, you become wiser and more cultured. People should not be afraid to travel and to live in different countries, you always experience and learn new things and ideas. This all becomes part of your identity in some way.

Case Study 2: Wolves keep Yellowstone in Balance

1.	What mistakes were made regarding the perception of wolves? What was the perspective on wolves then?

The wolves were seen by people as predators that are the enemy of progress. They thought that the wolves only harmed the ecosystem. Scientists still hadn´t discovered that both prey and predator were needed for an ecosystem to succeed.
They killed them all and there was no need to do that.

2. How did this perspective impact the ecosystem at Yellowstone?

When the humans killed all of the wolves, the consequences of this actions began to appear.
With no wolves left to hunt, the sick and injured prey lived, which is not good for the ecosystem because it affects the rest of the prey. Predators also make sure that overpopulation doesn´t happen, without the wolves, there was less food and resources for the other animals.

3. How did the perspective of what progress is, change?

At first, without having enough information, people thought that they were making progress by removing the wolves from Yellowstone. But then after seeing the consequences, they were putting wolves back, and that was their way of making progress.

4. Which relationships can you establish between the wolves and the ecosystem?

They help keep deer and elk populations in check, which can benefit many other plant and animal species. The rests of their prey also help feed and give nutrients for other wildlife species, like grizzly bears and scavengers.

5. How can you relate what you learned from this case study to how global issues work?

I think that a lot of global issues are caused by humans. When further research is done about an issue, the better humans can treat it and help the environment. I also think that the more we know and help in global issues the better world we can make, there is a lot we can do to help.
