While Bell is speaking with Carla Jean, which happens to be Moss’ wife, we find out quite a lot about Moss. We see that Moss married Carla when she was sixteen, making Moss about double her age. This compiled with some previous knowledge let’s on that Moss is a little creepy. We also find out that he served in Vietnam and understand that he isn’t just a dumb cowboy. He is quite crafty and intelligent which is a pattern that will most likely continue.

One of the flat characters that is shown in this novel is Carla Jean. She generally does not change and has the same behavior, opinions, and personality as she had earlier in the book. Carla doesn’t change mainly for the reason that she is a one way character. She is only really seen in the story through dialogue which is usually formatted in a Q and A. She assumes the role of the young and worried wife fairly early and will most likely stay that way throughout the book.
