It was so relate-able for me, because I am a Puerto Rican woman. Growing up I had to dress certain clothes to adjust to the different occasions, I often get catcalled by men and they thought I was asking for it when I wasn't.

It was also relatable for me, a Mexican woman. One of the earliest memory I had was at my old elementary school in Toronto. The children from that school never met a Mexican. Once they found out me as having first generation immigrant parents, they quickly labelled me as the true Mexican and called me Juana. Making the situation more worse, I also spoke Spanish. I completely understood how Cofer truly felt about the stereotype of Latinas.

Judith Ortiz Cofer illustrates several hardships she suffered due to the universal, misleading stereotypes propagated by the media. Cofer demonstrates various stereotypes that Latin women are subjected to, such as an experience in which she was regarded as a waitress at a California restaurant, and “the Hispanic woman as the ‘Hot Tamale.' At the end of the article, Cofer concludes that she hopes to change the stereotype everyone had about the Latinas.

I find this story fascinating to read because of my learning of Mexican culture and their clothes that draw more attention than wanted. This challenge, that Maria have to face, dont face any challenges for me, a white male. I find that difference between me and the protagonist fascinating and that show the fact that we don’t judge people based on their culture or appearance first before the actual person.

As a white male here whom is completely opposite from Cofer who is a Mexican woman with strong roots with her culture, I noticed that I gained an insight on the culture significance for many people who love and have their own experiences with the culture. This made me realize that white people don’t really have its own culture. Our cultures is often based on food regions such as southern and their Cajun food, northeast and their seafood. Places like those establish our own food culture but nothing related to our own clothes or anything else.

Coker's story is one of my favorites and it makes me think of my mother going through her struggles growing up. I only thought they were insulting the person not making a bias against a specific race. For example, West Side Story, it is a movie that has Hispanic influences but when I meet Mexican people, they are different from the movie, so this story helped open my eyes.

All four stories show that people don’t realize or think about their action before they do something. Another thing could be is that they grew up different and had a bias against all people who had the same skin. As a white male, I understand that I have to be careful with what I say or do around others. This showed me exactly what not to do and made me thought of what I should do if I was ever in that situation.

She handled many of those situation beautifully but I wished that those who were incorrect had learn on what to say and do rather than to insult someone by using a bias made by society.
