This story builds upon the climax for majority of the story; the element of rising action takes up most of the story before leading to the climax/falling action of saving the girl. This affects the reading of the story because through the rising action, the author gets very deep in each element so it gets the reader to understand the sadness/seriousness of the situation and how all of that "build-up" leads to the resolution.

The story is told through the eyes of the wife of the reporter who is trying to save the stranded girl. She is watching him on TV and is only able to see his facial expressions and body movements to gauge what he is feeling. And yet, she is able to understand him perfectly, as the emotion he feels in trying to help this dying child has its own magnitude, and this sort of outsider perspective we get as the reader helps encapsulate how much compassion Rolf, the reporter/husband, had during these moments, even during the time we had to accept that he couldn't do anything and was resigned to watching the girl die.
