Led by Ann Lee, the Shakers were a religious group who left England to avoid persecution. They went to America, waiting for the second coming of Christ. They were going to live in a perfect community by being celibate, confessing their sins, and separating themselves from the outside world. The Shakers lasted for a long time, but later on people couldn't deal with "being perfect" and started to break the rules and some even committed suicide.

They all divided work amongst themselves. This society did not last long: Brook Farm's central building caught fire and was destroyed, they ended the year after

Led by John Humphrey Noyes, Oneida was a community trying to duplicated heaven. They wanted to achieve heaven on Earth. John believed that men and women should be married to one another, and that all men were married to all women. People were in numerous relationships at once. However, building a community on sexual practices like that had its downfall. People would become jealous, and attached to one person. People started to leave the community and it just died down after that.

Influenced by industrialization and utilitarian philosophy, Robert Owen went on to start a community based on the principle of rational ethics instead of religion. Owen actually was against religion. The community had strict rules with curfews, house inspections, and fines for drunkenness. Manny children couldn't even see their own families because it would be "negative influence" on their education. Due to Owen's lack of leadership and guidance, people became dissatisfied with the community and split. It was short-lived.
