They were going to live in a perfect community by being celibate, confessing their sins, and separating themselves from the outside world. Owen actually was against religion. The community had strict rules with curfews, house inspections, and fines for drunkenness. Manny children couldn't even see their own families because it would be "negative influence" on their education. Due to Owen's lack of leadership and guidance, people became dissatisfied with the community and split.
