1. We believe this poem is a Ballad. This is because even though it doesn't have a very song-like tone to it, it is a poem with several stanzas and 4 rhyming lines.
2. The poem has a gloomy tone, and the mood is haunting. This is because the overall feeling of the poem gloomy and dark, and the events of the poem are difficult to forget.
3. One theme is Even though something appears to be safe, it may not stay safe. Another theme is The alternative isn't always the best choice.
4. This poem uses rhyming, end rhymes, and internal rhymes. It also uses consonance. It helped describing the theme of the poem by helping to shape the tone and in doing so the theme.

1. This type of poem is a call and response type of ballad. The daughter asks to go to the Freedom March and the mother responds with "No, baby, no, you may not go,..." We think it is a ballad because the mother repeats one line for stanzas two and four. It is also a narrative which adds to the ballad format.

2. We think the mood is serious because the daughter really wants to participate in the march but the mother replies that it is too dangerous for her and she should go to church instead. The mother was worried that her child would be killed if she went to the church. She thought the church was a safer place. The church was bombed and killed many people. The tone is mostly worried because throughout the poem, the mother is worried for the safety of her child.

3. The theme is things can happen unexpectedly anywhere. We think this because even though the mother thought the church was safe from violence, it was bombed. Everyone in the church was killed. The poet was trying to say that you can't always judge something by its appearance or what it seems to be.

4. Th author used mainly imagery to portray the setting and characters actions, feelings, and appearance. Foreshadowing was also used to give a sense of mystery and suspense. The repetition of one line was used to enforce the mother's words of importance.

1. The type of the poem is a ballad because it is using four rhyming lines in each stanza, and it's narrating a story through the poem.

2. The tone of the poem is serious because this was based off a true event in history. The mood of the poem is heartbroken because in stanza six and seven, the child died and her mother went looking for her.

3. The theme of the poem is keep your loved ones safe, because you never know when they can be ripped from your life. the evidence is that in stanza six, "...But that smile was the last smile to come upon her face..."

4. Rhyming and rhythmic, the whole poem rhymes in a ABCB pattern.

We think this because when the mom said no because she thought the freedom march was too dangerous, and told her to go to the church. She said that to her because she thought the church was safe, but then the church was bombed. So, sometimes what we take for as safe can actually change immediately.
