Impressionism is an art movement where you painted or drew what you saw, thought and felt.
Paintings with themes such as landscapes, people were very popular within this movement.
Impressionism had roots with realism and naturalism, realism growing from Franch rebelling against their oppressive regime, one artist even opening you an exhibition opposite of the Universal Exposition in Paris of 1855. Naturalism had emerged at the same time, took the natural world as a subject to paint. These two movements make the mixture that is impressionism.
Impressionism to me is extremely detailed, with the study of surrounding and natural environment, it gives this movement excellent style and themes.

Surrealism is an art form based on creativity and the minds imagination, challenging artists to come up with weird, wonderful and wacky works of art that just barely make sense.
Surrealism grew out of the Dada movement to rebel against middle class complicacy. Surrealism began as a group allied with Dada, emerging as Dadaism was collapsing in Paris. André Breton was the creator of Surrealism back in 1924, however the name was first coined in 1917 by Guillaume Apollinaire as he used it in the notes of the ballet Parade that had been written by Pablo Picasso, Leonide Massine, Jean Cocteau, and Erik Satie.
During this time, the civil rights movement in America was happened in 1956, this could have Definity have affected the people's emotions.
To me, Surrealism is extremely creative yet almost gives me a lonely feeling. Items that are common in our lives and twisting them into drooping liquids. This painting is a wonderful example of the Surrealism movement.

Aegean Art was made by a civilisation spread across the Aegean Sea and even mainland Greek. Without trace, this civilisation vanished. These artifacts were split into three style groups, Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenaean.
The term 'Aegean art' was used to represent all of the art that was produced by the cultures that existed in the Aegean Sea during the bronze age, 2800-1100 BCE.
Cycladic art was in fact one of the earliest finds dating back to 3000- c.2000, then followed by Minoan and lastly Mycenaean.
I believe that this is a great example of art history, showing an example of a group of people that produced styles in their movement.

Younge British Artists is the most modern movement. originating from a group that met to produce two of the most shocking exhibits, 'Freeze' in 1988 and 'Sensation' in 1997. This movement brings out creativity and imagination when pieces are viewed. It allows you to make your own choices on what the meanings are and brings a brand-new, futuristic side from the art community. Young British Artists are now some of the richest people in the world, with paintings being sold for millions. However due to the amount of effort that goes into making these pieces, many criticize the movement and artists. I believe that this movement can be very entertaining, yet I do feel however that some pieces maybe lack reason and leave most feeling confused. I feel as though if many people feel the same about this movement, then it could dry out extremely fast.

Pop art was made as a stylish way to produce almost dramatic scenes and was made full of bright colours. They would use this movement for marketing products such as Mickey mouse, Tomato soup tins etc. This helped bring business to not only the artists but the companies. Pop art has roots in many different movements, such as Neo-Dada. Pop itself was created in the United Kingdom in 1950s when post-war paintings began to increase. Paintings of everyday items almost as a celebration. Americans joined in on the movement, such artists as Andy Warhol producing some of the most recognisable pieces in the Pop art movement. The piece I choose to represent the movement is called 'Drowning Girl' made in the 1960s.
I believe pop art is an iconic movement. I love the style and colours used in these pieces and how smooth the line art is.

These drawing consisted of animals from that time and even descriptions of fighting, handprints and human figures. These drawing date back to 40,000 BCE to 63,000 BCE, by the Neanderthals, a species that was closely related to us. In fact, one of the first discovered pieces of cave art known to man was made by a Neanderthal.
I believe that cave art is extremely important as it shows not only our history as humans, but our development as a species. Without such examples we wouldn't understand how far we've come.

Renaissance art was inspired by the historical Renaissance, (beginning in Italy) that took place in Europe in the 15th- 16th century. Artists started to produce work during this time and throughout their work, you can see their emotions, describing how they possibly felt at the time. These paintings were usually made using oil paints which gives most of the pieces a yellow-Ish tint as the paintings have aged. Renaissance also developed overtime, from early renaissance from 1401-1490. This style of renaissance was very inspired by religion. Then High Renaissance beginning with Leonardo da Vinci's work in 1483-1485 with a painting called 'The Virgin of the Rocks'.
I believe that the Renaissance is very elegant throughout its early stages and to its later stage. This movement produced some of the most famous pieces such as the 'Mona Lisa' created in 1503-1519.
These painting continue to inspire young artists around the world even to this day.

Romanticism

Romanticism travelled its way throughout Europe and the United States (late 18th-19th), rebelling against the ideals during the enlightenment. Emotion is the key to this movement. The word 'Romanticism' was first used in Germany, in the late 1700s, when critics August and Friedrich Schlegal wrote of 'romantische Poesie', meaning 'Romantic Poetry'. This inspired other countries like France to like the idea of Romanticism and by the 1820s, Romanticism was one of the leading movements throughout Europe. An early product of Romanticism was the German movement Sturm und Drang, meaning "storm and stress", although, this was a literacy and music movement in the 1760s to the 1780s. This had an impact on artists and the public in general.
Romanticism shows such things as landscapes and human anatomy. It also shows a great example of the public reactions during a revolution in history.
I think that this movement is very interesting and the way it presents itself is beautifully crafted.

Abstract Expressionism

Abstract expressionism is a movement to let loose. In this movement there are many different techniques and textures you can create, such as throwing the paint to create drips etc. All painters from the 1940s would naturally become inspired by styles such as Social Realism and the Regionalist since the great depression causes many to show their emotions and feeling throughout their art.
By the end of the 1940s, these movements had gradually faded but their early work influenced their style. Abstract Expressionism had roots with Surrealism, with emotions being playing a huge part in the makings of these pieces. These paintings were full of deep grief as this movement took place post-war.
My opinion on Abstract Expressionism is that of interest. I love most of the textures that the artists create, and that the art can be truly whatever you feel like. it can also be something completely different for someone else.

Expressionism was created as an act against impressionism and academic art. It was also made to help people express their feelings and increase spirituality. Expressionism showed the way people expressed emotions when conflict was happening. The painting that I've used to represent the Expressionism movement is a very famous painting called 'The Scream' made in 1893 by a Norwegian artist named Edvard Munch. This piece represents anxiety of the human condition. Expressionism would become almost like therapy art for these artists, allowing them to expression their own feelings and even the general feeling of the people. The name 'Expressionism' was believed to be coined by Czech art historian Antonin Matejcek, in 1910.
I think that expressionism is a wonderful yet tragic movement, getting to experience someone's pain and hurt through creation.
