The organization aims to reduce violence across the world by using methods similar to that of disease control and methods for behavior change. They aim to implement their model of treating violence as an infectious disease across the world. They also want to make awareness about the effectiveness of their method so that others can implement it themselves or with aid from the organization. Overall, they are working and doing a number of things to reduce violence worldwide.

The organization has seen many examples of great things resulting from their work. In the first area where they deployed their model, Chicago's West Garfield Park, a neighborhood known for being dangerous, they were able to reduce shootings by as much as 67% in one year. In New Orleans, they were able to reduce the number of shooting victims by 47%, reduce retaliations by 85% and reduce shooting re-injury by 44%. In the city of San Pedro Sula in Honduras, the organization was able to decrease shootings and killings by 88%, and mediated over 1000 conflicts. There were able to help 1 site go 17 months without any shootings. Another example, Basra and Sadr City witnessed 1000 interruptions of conflicts. In Cape Town, Africa, killings were reduced by 14%, attempted killings by 29% and serious assaults were reduced by 10%. Many government officials and other people in power are beginning to notice the effect the organization is having on places and starting to believe in and support their model. More and more officials are turning to the organization for help to solve the violence in their city.

When and how was "Cure Violence" founded?

The organization was founded in 2000 by Gary Slutkin, M.D. He was the former head of the Intervention development unit of the World Health organization, and was an epidemiology professor at the University of Illinois/Chicago School of Public Health. As such he was familiar with both violence control methods and disease control methods. He noticed that violence seems to spread almost exactly like an infectious disease. He realized that since violence was so similar to diseases, it should be treated as such. Thus he founded the organization in 2000 and began deploying the model in Chicago.

Why should violence be treated like a disease?

There are a surprising number of parallels that can be drawn between the spread of violence and the spread of disease. First of all, in one study in Chicago, shootings took place approximately every 85 days. This is similar to the time frame between which a host gets infected by a disease and symptoms begin to appear. People quickly move from being a friend of a victim to a victim themselves, almost like how friends often spread illnesses to each other because they are together so often. Obviously, "There is not an infectious particle," according to Gary Slutkin, founder of the organization, but he believes that a person becomes "infected" through the brain. The results of implementation of the model have been truly amazing (see "What has the organization accomplished by their work") and has proven to be a very effective approach in dealing with violence across the world. The model is critically acclaimed by many and more and more places are implementing it.

Proof of political significance

The organization is politically significant because the impact of the organization could be huge. At least for a period of time, they could nearly eradicate gun violence in certain areas. The impact could also be somewhat long lasting, positively. It should affect many people since in certain cities where they plan on preventing the majority of violence in, violence affects a large portion of the population. I believe that it can have somewhat of an indirect impact on us, however, since we here about violence all the time in the news. After witnessing how effective Cure Violence's model can be, many are beginning to support the organization and their model. For example, many cities who do not know how to deal with violence have turned to the organization for help. They also have a fairly large number or partners helping them to do their work. So it would seem that quite a few people, organizations and even governments are for them.
The organization, through avocation and demonstration, is revolutionizing the way violence is treated across the world, and the results are astounding. The organization is showing no signs of stopping their work and with time, more and more will be affected positively by the movement.
