In the year 1862, the Dakota people had disagreements with the settlers of Minnesota, they ended up having to live on a reservation in trade for annuities. When people refused to trade, the Dakota people protested by fighting and killing hundreds of settlers. The military sent over 300 people to death, when President Lincoln reviewed the evidence he changed the number to 38 people to death. The people who fled were exiled to a area which developed the name The Dakota Territory.

Kendall Ambrose

Description: The U.S Army was building forts along the Bozeman trail to make a path to the Montana gold mines. Crazy Horse (a Native American tribe) tricked the U.S commander to send out a group of 80 soldiers plus Captain William Fetterman to pursue a what they believed to be a small riding party. Although a massive group of warriors was waiting for them, this was known as the Fetterman's Massacre, which was the beginning of the "Red Cloud War".

Anika Nau

Conflicts began escalating between settlers and native americans and in 1867 congress decided to act. Congress created the Indian Peace Commission which proposed creating 2 large reservations on the plains one for the Sioux and another in the southern plains for native americans living in that area. These reservations would have federal agencies running these reservations. With harsh negotiations and pressure by the commission, tribal leaders signed the treaties. These reservations would not last long with many native americans leaving the reservations by 1870 in disgust due to impoverished living conditions and corruption of american traders.

Bryce Thomsen

The native americans didn't like that so they were violent with the settlers and wrecked most of what they owned. The governor tried to make a deal with the native americans that they will give them food and protection if they surrender. More native american went to negotiate with the Chief Black Kettle. But then the colorado volunteers attacked the Black Kettle Camp. The colorado volunteers ignored the truce and still attack, it was a brutal two day battle. 14 U.S soldiers died and 69-600 native americans died.

Lily kaiser

The ghost dance which celebrated the hope of white settlers picking up and leaving just for there buffalo to come back and be reunited with their ancestors. The government wanted to bane this dance and the only way they thought they could was to steal Sitting Bull, the Lakota chief. He was seen as the leader almost, the reason why they were doing the dance. His people loved him so they fought back, violence broke out. December, 1890 at Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota, 25 US soldiers died, around 200 Lakota people were killed. The saddest part is they also lost the Sitting Bull, their chief.
-vanessa shirley
