The Freedmen's Bureau helped to make the transition out of slavery easier for the enslaved. It provided people who were slaves a place to live and connection to medical help if needed. It also provided them ways to negotiate their labor contracts with the landowners.

In his very last speech before being killed Abraham Lincoln talks about the suffrage black soldiers and others have to go through. When Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrenders to the Union general Ulysses S. Grant the Civil War ends. Six days after that President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in which vice president who was a Southern Democrat Andrew Johnson took his place as president.

President Andrew Johnson had plans of Presidential Reconstruction. Which means property needed to be restored (not including slaves) to all of the Southerners who were willing to swear their loyalty to the Union. He also made the South's large landowners and the Confederate leadership will have petition him individually to be pardoned. This plan also made it so states had to ratify the Thirteenth Amendment which he planned to do so in the summer. He had started to become easy going towards the white South including making the order to restore land to its former owners even the land given to freed slaves by General Sherman January field order. Because of this Freedman were very questionable about leaving the land they have in South Carolina and Georgia. President Andrew Johnson even started to put himself with the Southern elite pushing out the idea that white men by themselves had to manage the South.

Helped to re-establish white supremacy. Restricted black people and helped to control what labor they did. The freedman were only allowed to work as field hands. Any black people who argued against this would be punished. Black men who did not have a job could then be auctioned to work for planters. Black kids could be taken from their families and forced to work. These laws were just slavery without chains.

Secret organization made to intimidate African American citizens to get back white rule. Was founded in Pulaski, Tennessee.
