Hello! I am Fernando Maldonado Zavala. I am currently 23 years old and studying Computer Science at Mapua Malayan Colleges Mindanao. I am of Honduras citizenship, having said that, I have always had an interest in sports growing up, primarily football, but now that I've gotten older I have gained an interest in combat sports. During my free time I enjoy listening to music and other types of media such as podcasts and long conversations on a variety of topics. Regarding Philippine Pop Culture, the topic I have the most connection to is the music, while I may not always understand the lyrics, the flow and beat of the music is refreshing and something different to the music I usually hear.

The Rapid Growth of the Filipino Music Scene

There has been a rise of indie music in the Philippines especially those that are pop, rock and folk-influenced counterparts through the years. I chose this cultural feature as it channels the raw, often experimental sounds that articulate love, longing and sociopolitical issues of young Filipinos. More recently, OPM has also been used to touch on sentiments of identity and society by independent bands such as December Avenue or Ben&Ben. Today, the Filipino values in their music and many of us who loved them when we were younger are cheering on OPM 2.0 with our voices raised… together as one grateful nation back again because there is nothing more Pinoy than a comeback!
