William Kamkwamba, 14, has made history with his creation of “electric wind” in the city of Wimbe, Malawi. This accomplishment is a hard task for a college student, let alone a 14-year-old. As a terrible famine struck his home country, the village was in need of a miracle to survive. William himself was starving. Many people started dying from hunger. William couldn’t pay his fees at Kachokolo Secondary School and he was forced to drop out. William started looking for anything that would educate him. He went to a local library and came out with a book called Using Energy. He found the idea of building a windmill, a tool to pump water from the ground and produce electricity from the wind. William worked hard to have two harvests a year so the Kamkwambas could have food. With help from his cousin Geoffrey and his good friend Gilbert, the three succeeded in doing what most people couldn’t do and proved those who thought he was openga, or crazy.

William Kamkwamba saves his family by building a windmill. He got the idea from a library near his house, where he read books. A few months earlier, there was a famine. Everyone started to starve, and his parents couldn’t earn enough money for the family. As a result, they could only eat 1 meal per day, and his parents couldn’t pay his school fees, so he couldn’t go to school either. After the famine was over, he learned about science in the library, and went to the scrapyard. He collected spare parts there, and built a windmill that powered his house, making it so that he could stay up late. Another famine came later, but thanks to Kamkwamba’s windmill, his family survived.
