I started to integrate SEL into our daily routine by reading a page from our feelings book and doing an activity each day during morning meeting. Above is an example of a worksheet that I created to go with the feelings book reading about kindness. The feelings book is called 'The Feelings Activity Book for Children'.

For election day, I created a voting booth and ballot box in our classroom to get students excited to participate in the election process. Students nominated three Superkids for the election: Hot Rod, Golly, and Sal. Students were called up one at a time to fill out a ballot and put it in the ballot box. Students colored their own 'I Voted' ribbon and I used parchment paper and packing tape to make them into stickers. Each student recieved their own personalized sticker after voting. What a memorable election day!

Attached are the slides that I used for centers and morning routine. These are Halloween themed as I used them during the month of October. The center slides show the three centers, the groups in each, and a visual timer.

Here are writing samples from three of my students. They were given the sentence starter 'My favorite animal is' and had to fill in the blank independently.

Here is a Venn Diagram we created as a whole class. We compared two Superkids poems we read: Super Scrub-a-matic and Super-Duper Golly. Students did a great job finding the similarities and differences between the two poems.

Here are the ballots and tally chart that I created for our Superkids election. Students nominated three Superkids candidates the day before the election: Hot Rod, Golly, and Sal. Students made voter registration cards, filled out their ballots in the voting booth, and put it in the ballot box. As students were called up one at a time to vote, they worked on campaign posters for their favorite candidate. After everyone voted, we counted the ballots one at a time together as students filled out their tally chart.

To introduce voting, students listened to a Vooks read aloud called 'I Voted: Making a Choice Makes a Difference' and learned some voting vocabulary. Students practiced what they learned about voting by voting on their favorite fruit. After they filled out their ballots and voted, we created a whole class bar graph with sticky notes. Each student drew the fruit that they chose on their sticky note. I chose three girls to draw the tally marks as we counted the ballots and had them choose three boys to count the tally marks.

Lucky ducks!!! I use lucky ducks as a way to randomly call on students. Students get excited when I choose a lucky duck.

Our Superkids ELA curriculum had a reading about pet rocks so of course students had to make their own! I brought in rocks for students to design using sharpies, feathers, googley eyes, and glue. We also used brown paper bags cut down short as 'homes' for our pet rocks. Once students created their own pet rock and a house for it to live in, they completed the above writing activity.

My students participated in an apple taste test for day 3 of our apple unit. I brought green, yellow, and red apples for students to taste, smell, and feel. Students recorded the taste, texture, and smell on their apple taste test sheet (attached). Students chose their favorite and we used that data to create a class tally chart.

Students completed the prompt 'I'm tired of being a ghost, this year I want to be a...' and colored in a ghost to go with it. This was such a cute and fun Halloween activity that we got to hang up in the hallway for everyone to see!

Students left their pet rocks at school overnight...so they had a campfire slumber party! Students loved seeing what their pet rocks were up to when they got to school the next morning.

Students play headbands with a partner to practice new memory words and words with new digraphs! We play this once every two or so weeks and students love it!

Phonics rules are displayed as we go over them. We refer to these phonics rules daily and constantly practice them. We review the phonics rules before each phonics test.

Students created their own voter registration cards that they used for the election. I had students bring up their voter registration cards for me to check before they were able to take a ballot and vote.

We read 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving' and students completed a writing craftivity to go with the story. We brainstormed a list of 'non-turkey foods' as a class. Students chose three foods from the list to complete their 'Save the turkeys! Eat more...' writing prompt. This was such a fun activity!

The first grade team dressed up as Inside Out 2 characters for Halloween this year! It was fun to collaborate and see the students reactions! :)

We read 'Balloons Over Broadway' and discussed the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Students each created their own parade float using paper and balloons. Students had fun showing off their balloons during the schools annual Thanksgiving Parade.

This is the Padlet that I created for the 'legacy project' required by my supervisor. (If you click on the above picture, it will take you to the Padlet). I began a shoe tying challenge the second week of school. Students practiced throughout the week with practice shoes that I made out of cardboard and shoe laces, as well as at home. Each Friday, students had the opportunity to demonstrate that they are able to tie their own shoes. If students are able to, they get a pair of shoe laces, candy, and a certificate to show their families.

We made a verb anchor chart as a whole class. After going over what a verb is, students brainstormed verbs and we acted them out as they were added to the anchor chart.
