Ptuj is one of the oldest cities in Slovenia. Perched above the city the mighty Ptuj Castle offers splendid views far and wide and hosts the PtujOrmož Regional Museum, whose permanent exhibition will take you on a journey through the millennia of the city’s history.  

        The most notable of Ptuj’s events is the international Shrovetide carnival called Kurentovanje that enjoys a tradition of more than 50 years. The festival week features many ethnographic and carnival parades, concerts, dances in fancy dress and more. At the end of August visit the Days of Poetry and Wine, one of the most important European poetry festivals, where poetry readings are accompanied by other arts.

    The carnival season peaked in Slovenia on Sunday with parades in traditional carnival centres, such as Ptuj (NW) and Cerknica (SW). Around 60,000 visitors were reported from Ptuj, where the parade featured more than 2,500 costumed figures from ten countries.

The festivities in Ptuj, which has developed into a truly international affair, were again centred around the kurenti, the age-old sheepskin costumes with cowbells, 600 of which were chasing away the winter in Slovenia's oldest town today.

Along with 30 Slovenian groups, the 57th Ptuj parade also saw 13 troupes from Scotland, Croatia, Italy, France, Austria, Germany, Macedonia, Belgium and Serbia.

Mr Oliver BUCEK, the Slovenian coordinator, prepared an amazing programme . As it can be seen in each day’s summary, the meeting was very fruitful in terms of office work and cultural interaction. We all satisfied that all the planned activities were done well so far and each partner school had its own  positive feedback about them.
