However, the "old" Charlie- the Charlie from before the experiment- has a sense of blissful optimism to him that fits perfectly with this song, and the themes of it still persist throughout the book. Of course, Charlie would be completely oblivious when things went bad and he screwed up; his coworkers would either joke about it and he'd join in not even realizing what he was doing, or he'd completely forget about it and the memory would get pushed to the back of his mind. This is most highlighted by the lines, "I ran my mouth off a bit too much, oh what did I say? Well, you just laughed it off, it was all okay." Charlie would often say things that were stupid and laughable to most people, but they would laugh abut it, so he'd be none the wiser. In the end, Charlie thinks, things have turned out and will turn out good. We'll all float on, in a sense. This theme carries through the book in multiple places. When Charlie discovers he will soon revert back to his old IQ and forget what he has learned, he takes the news very gracefully; he knows nothing can be done, and he's still made a contribution to science either way. "Bad news comes, don't you worry even when it lands; good news will work its way to all them plans." And later, when Alice and Charlie reunite for a short while, they know it's only for a little while, and afterwards they'll both go their separate ways. Norma has matured immensely and welcomes Charlie with open arms, but Charlie knows he can't stay forever due to his mental decline. This is only cemented when his mother snaps and pulls a knife on him, and Norma and Charlie part for the last time.
