King Dom Joao VI in the year 1808 made Brazil a part of the United Kingdom of Portugal. In 1815 he granted his son Dom Pedro with the title of regent prince giving him the authority to rule the land of Brazil under the circumstances that the king was not present or was dead. 1820 was when Portugal underwent their constitutional revolution, this was initiated by the liberal constitutionalists. Portuguese military officers who were based in Brazil at this time fully supported this movement, this lead to a rift between military and Brazil's natives. Shortly after Brazil was put into political subordination being forced to fall to the “rule” of Portugal. Many of Brazil’s original government policies and practices set in place by King Dom had been done away with. The event of the American Revolution which provided Brazil with the idea that Foreign rule could be thrown off, encouraged Prince Pedro to step in and Claim the independence of Brazil in 1822.
