In Salem, where the Crucible takes place, there were witch trials and people were terrified of witches int the 1700's. A big reason for this fear was because of Calvinism.The Puritans believed Satan was acting in the real world and thought anything bad was the devil's work. They also believed Satan was recruiting witches and wizards so when a group of girls kept accusing people of witchcraft the people of Salem believed them. These witch trials led to 200 people being accused and jailed by the end of 1692 and as many as twenty people killed.
