A Modern Day Critique of Beauty and the Beast by Halima Omar

I've chosen to analyze modern film adaptations of Beauty and the Beast through a feminist lens for the purposes of this paper. Many fairy tales are found to be lacking in the feminist department, as they were originally created in older times. While Beauty and the Beast fits into the category of archaic and patriarchal fairy tales, there have been many 21st century film adaptations. We can only hope as a society that we learn from previous mistakes to teach the younger generations better, and film is one way to do that. However, the four film adaptations I've reviewed for the purposes of this paper don't do much for women's rights or gender equality, despite being made in a much more progressive and modern time. This begs the question; why have the film adaptations of Beauty and the Beast progressed into the modern age of technology and mass media, but certain aspects like a woman’s independence and freedom haven’t?

Beastly is a movie that is based off the 2007 hit novel Beastly by Alex Flinn. The CBS film takes place in modern day New York in a high school setting. It features a rich boy who manipulates Lindy's father into making her stay at his house. He falls for her while she lives at his house and can't seem to let her go even after her lets her leave. There was a twist on this movie, as it featured children instead of adults.

Candlelight Media Group's 2007 remake on Beauty and the Beast is a low budget and painfully mediocre film. Not only did this film glorify workplace harassment, but it also portrays the heroine as a spineless stepping stool. This film was a perfect example of an abusive male and a subordinate and an obedient female. It was an endless circle of a bad relationship set in the real world rather than an magical one. Nevertheless, it captured Beast's character perfectly

Huffington Post: Emma Watson Denies Stockholm Syndrome Accusations

This article, written by the Huffington Post, covers the star of the 2017 Walt Disney remake of Beauty and the Beast, Emma Watson, and her claim that the newer film no longer holds elements of Stockholm Syndrome and domestic abuse. She defends the film, claiming that Belle always voices her opinions and doesn't let Beast order her around. Emma presents the idea that because Belle is still in charge of her mind, she hasn't fallen prey to Stockholm Syndrome. There are many who critique this idea and argue that when Belle falls in love with her captor and returns to him after she has been released, she has does indeed have Stockholm Syndrome. Maybe she has full control over her opinions, but when she thinks that her relationship with Beast is acceptable, that shows the audience his hold on her mind is more powerful than we thought. Part of my further research is why even self-proclaimed feminists can come to such a conclusion.

It critiques the idea that a toxic and harmful relationship built of deceit and captivity can actually morph into a perfect relationship. It sends the wrong message to children and harms what their ideal image of a relationship is.

Walt Disney's second film adaptation of Beauty and the Beast was widely popular when it came out. The new live action film was seen by viewers of all age groups. It wasn't as feminist as Emma Watson claimed it would be, which was a shock for everyone, since she was a self-proclaimed feminist. We all needed a second to understand where the improvements were made, but then we realized there weren't any. This helps me understand what feminism means to Disney.

This film was Disney's first film adaptation of the story Beauty and the Beast. While 1991 was a fairly modern time for the world in terms of the position of women in society, there were still some major issues regarding women's rights that needed advancements. There was a lot of controlling and manipulative male figures within this film that would help my thesis.
