Since the reform and opening in 1978, China has undergone massive transformations in almost every aspect of social life. This created a tremendous amount of anxiety among Chinese urbanites who embarked on a quest for newly-defined success and happiness. In this dialogue, Anna Iskra (postdoctoral fellow at the HKIHSS) shares her observations on the rising popularity of New Age/Body-Mind-Spirit practices among the urban middle class in the People’s Republic. She discusses how New Age workshops become spaces for intense emotional releases that are imagined as tools for people’s re-embedment into a more harmonious network of relationships.
