Child labour allows/allowed appalling incidents to happen to children at young ages, (Labor, 2016). Children would work 19 hours a day and usually 7 days a week. This was not a surprise and was considered ‘not extreme’. Many diseases would be picked up and children would die, (Www2.needham.k12.ma.us, 2016). Working conditions were not clean and many children would become unhealthy. This was because of many people not caring about children’s work conditions, therefore not putting in effort to fix them. Many people wanted to fix the children’s working conditions, due to it effected the people’s towns and creating pollution. But, the factory owners did not care about the children’s working condition, because if they became sick, they were rich enough to get medical health care. Statistics on child labour in the industrial revolution, include, that 115 million children were working in worst possible forms of child labour during the industrial revolution, (Un.org, 2016). The text explains that children should not have to work in factories and workshops with bad conditions until they are fully developed, (Www2.needham.k12.ma.us, 2016). The pope thought this was wrong because he believed that children had to be fully developed and skilled to work at young ages. As said by Pope Leo XIII, in the Rerum Novarum, “And, in regard to children, great care should be taken not to place them in workshops and factories until their bodies and minds are sufficiently developed.”, (W2.vatican.va, 2016). The Rerum Novarum believes that both children and women are not suited for jobs made for men. But in the industrial revolution they were still forced to do these jobs. The Church responded in this Bible teachings as said, “14 Here for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be a burden, for I seek not what is yours but you. For children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.”,(Openbible.info, 2016). This scripture links to child labour because it explains that the bible believed that children should not have to work to pay for their parents. Another scripture includes, “12 she was told, “The older will serve the younger.”. This passage, Romans 9:12, explains that the young should not serve the old, but the old serve the young. These teachings are both relative towards child labour and have a good explanation of the issue. The catholic church was challenged to achieve justice within the society, but it was soon accomplished through teachings. For example, in the mines, in 1842, women, girls, and boys under the age of 10 were prohibited from underground work, (Industrialrevolution.wordpress.com, 2016). Many more reforms were made to improve society in the industrial revolution, and almost all of them were successful. Another reform made, was in 1819, when peels factory cotton mills made the reform that children under the age of 9 cannot be employed, and workdays for children from 9-16 years old were limited to 12 hours, (Parlimen, 2016). As shown in the industrial revolution reforms were made quite often all to improve society.
