Artist quoted: 'making art by doing your practise is one thing and promoting it to market yourself is another'.

Many emerging artists like the Artist and her peers usual opt to using free websites that are free or has paid a small fee in creating their own website page platform.

Saatch in New York has a program that recruits recent graduates into their program 'Young artists' and sell on their behalf however does have a high commission rate and is not always the affordable choice. Especially when artists must sell artworks to sustain their livelihoods.

The process of selling artwork is essentially urging the artist to market themselves, which is something that they are general not taught but rather told to utilise galleries, even if it is costly

Other platforms like Pinterest, Artsy, Instagram and Facebook does have potential to reach a wider audience however it lack tools like visibility and filtration processes. Because at the end of the day not every social media user would be interested in buying art and some cases people tend to go through mainstream services in acquiring artworks (art dealers, galleries, auction)

When asked what features are needed from an online platform in better connecting art collectors, artists, art lovers, anyone and everyone else, she pointed out visibility plays a key role in compiling algorithms designed for the user. Therefore features that can adjust visibility could potential change the landscape. However the questions of how the concept of adjusting visibility can be equalised.

To note: when first using the app there should a process of identifying where the user would fit in the algorithm (e.g. survey, questionnaire)

Online platform that specifically cater towards art lovers, buyers and fellow artists (Artist POV)

Options and process to finding and discover new artists or art suppliers could be wider and more efficient.

When asked about how she connects with art suppliers, the interviewee pointed out that she primarily relies on personal recommendations of successful artists that had previously worked with her. In addition, and more sporadically, she also contacts them through LinkedIn, but it is not the most convenient way to check the artist´s portfolio. This interview insight, the showcase artist´s portfolio, is something we thought of when designing the platform which could improve networking opportunities and also widener the spectrum of collaboration possibilities from a hiring organisation´s perspective.

Having a channel that facilitates a broad network of art suppliers and artists can be crucial to art galleries and related businesses.

Having a wide range of art suppliers can be critical for any art related institution for various reasons. Nowadays the majority of art galleries work with different buyers often in different locations and countries which has market advantages and disadvantages because of the wars or delicate political situations in certain regions. The interviewee for instance often does business in Hong Kon, Germany, and Singapore in addition to Vietnam. Having a broad list of high quality and reliable art suppliers around the globe can be crucial in this context as it guarantees to meet the buyers need and contract regardless of the external adverse circumstances.

Artist´s application process is challenging especially for medium and small art galleries.

There is a vast number of artists that apply to specific types of collaborations even if they are not certified artists. This situation puts the medium and small art galleries into a financial strain as there is no resources to properly process all the applications they receive, neither there is a way to filter which artists are certified and which ones are not.

Art gallery owners struggle with verification processes.

They must verify whether the artists they are collaborating with are certified established artists (otherwise the art gallery can get finned as a consequence) or verifying the authenticity of the art pieces as well.

Hiring and contracting artists is an time-consuming process that could be done more efficiently.

Gallery owners or the person in charge has to go over the entire portfolio, checking all the details, availability, etc and that is a time-consuming and expensive process for the organism hiring, “… sometimes is even hard to find the artist´s portfolio because they do not have an official place where we can go and check all these details …”
