According to historians, it happened on the night of 27 to 28 January 1687. That night there was a full moon and low clouds. A man stepping out of a pub thought the tower was on fire and sounded the alarm immediately. Neighbours, startled from their sleep, opened their windows and could only see the same thing. In no time at all, the whole city was in turmoil and the alarm sounded. The city council, the mayor in the lead, rushed to the scene of the calamity and started to organise the extinguishing works in a hurry. Along the tower stairs, buckets of water went from hand to hand like a chain, but even before reaching the top, the moon shifted through the mist and the courageous inhabitants of Mechelen had to admit that they had only seen the reddish glow of the moon. After all, the moonlight shone through the windows of the cathedral and the low clouds stood at the level of the bells in the St. Rombout tower, giving the impression that smoke was coming out of the tower.

This is a video of one of our dances. (the dance starts at minute 1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRyL6xm3l6g
I'm part of one group of folklore in Almeirim, a city very neer of Santarém. Our clothes are very unique even in comparing with other folklore groups here in Portugal. It's a little bit difficult to dance with our shoes because there aren't much traccion and we ofte lose them we dancing. My group have a lot of old people or very adult people and I love to exchange some experiences with them, it's very rewarding.

This is my favorite food of all! It's called stone soup because it has a real stone inside the soup. It's a caracteristic soup in Almeirim made with beans, pork, sausages, coriander, potatoes, onions, etc. This soup is associated with a legend that are explained in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVtoMMQIu5A

“Espiga” Day or “Espiga” Thursday is a Portuguese celebration that takes place on Ascension Thursday day with a morning walk, in which we grab some wheat that means bread, marigold that means fortune, poppy flower that means love, olive branches than means peace, rosemary that means health and a vine branch that means joy. According to tradition, those elements bring to the families who take them home the things that they mean. The “bouquet” should be placed behind the entrance door and should only be replaced by a new one on the day of the year of the following year. It’s also recurrent to put a coin in the bouquet to bring money to the family.
